2023 Flying Scotsman £2 coin - in colour!

Recommended Posts

The silver proof will be £85 and have a mintage of 4472, while the piedfort will be £135 and have a mintage of 1923.

That's not particularly interesting on its own, but it's probably good news for anyone who bought the 2023 silver proof annual sets (normal or piedfort), as the individual silver coins will only be available with colouring from what I can tell. That should give the non-coloured ones in the annual sets a much lower mintage than expected (650 and 400)?

I’m not sure where I got this from (consider it a rumour!), but the coins from the 2023 annual sets might show up as part of the definitive sets later in the year.

So we aren’t completely out of the woods yet.

Yeah I've seen talk on some of the Facebook groups that they'll be part of a Coronation set later this year. Time will tell

I like it because it sort of suggests movement and provides a nice background.  Just my opinion.

You're not alone!

"Probably my favourite part of John's design is the background oddly. It's just got a really nice curve, it draws your line as if the train is moving, it looks dynamic and it's just a really strong silhouette."

Fair point. I hadn't actually made that connection. I thought the fireman was stood on the footplate blowing bubbles. 😁

The bubbles aren’t a problem by themselves.

In fact the design (including the bubbles) is actually really great.

But, do you notice a rather significant difference when compared to the coins?

The answer is below…

The intersecting outer concentric circle - the bimetallic part of the £2 coin - is missing.

This intersecting circle breaks a fundamental design principle and spoils the aesthetic.

This is one of those times something in one medium did not translate well onto another.

I would actually prefer the art print over the coin itself. 🙂

An ugly coin.......

Have to disagree, I really like that. I'm not one for coloured coins myself but I think that's pretty special.

I mean not special enough I'd actually spend money on it but still 🤷
