Hi, I wonder if anyone is able to help, please? I have a small art nouveau design brooch which appears to be silver and is marked ‘IL 33’.  There are no other marks I can see. The clasp and detailing seem to suggest the brooch does indeed date to c.1900-1910 and isn’t repro.

Please can anyone explain the marking? I’m having trouble photographing it, but the marks aren’t in any kind of cartouche and I can’t find a likely maker with those initials. I’m in the UK.

many thanks in advance for any help!

Can you photograph through a magnification glass?

I like to buy the pre-dip rise.

Hi there, I managed to get these. I think it’s possible there may also have been a mark to the side of the bale which is now rubbed, but I can’t say for sure. Would really appreciate any thoughts!

Hi, @Zeus

I have not an answer for your question, I can only make suppositions.

1. If the brooch is not silver, the maker can stamp what he want, because there are not any regulations: IL - his initials, 33 - year 1833/1933.

2. If the brooch is silver, for sure it is not british, but continental and the purity of silver can be .800, .830, .835, .875, .900, .925 or .950. In many european countries, small silver pieces were hallmark exempt in the past, so the inscription can be the same as above: IL - his initials, 33 - year 1833/1933. As you said, can be another mark to the side of the bale which is now rubbed, so more informations about your item can not be extracted from there.

I am sorry I can not help you more.

Kindest regards,

Stefan.
