I did look in Spink book too

You're an experienced guy, I'm actually starting to think this isn't genuine lol

It's a little bit thicker than the other half's I have, and diameter is a little bit thickers too but still weighs in a 4g exactly?

If genuine, this coin may exceed bullion value IMO. Often, half sovereigns of this condition/age/SA are not confined to exactly  half the bullion value of a full sovereign. I remember buying an 1895 sovereign a few years ago, and paid exactly the same for the half!  I checked a few prices - between £236 and £270….

Does size matter?

😎

Yes the smaller the better and you can't change my mind.

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

How about reinforcing you, that you are correct? a Half Sov is much smaller than Silver 1oz £2 Britannia, and well i would say its better.

Yeah but does it seem genuine? Don't want to ring tomorrow and make a tit of myself unnecessarily lol

On reflection it may be a fake. More information needed. Have you actually bought it? where from? Who are you calling? If you have genuine concerns because of the difference in spec. you should not feel embarrassed. The weight of a fake can  be changed. If its been in circulation, and it does look that way, I would expect it to have lost about 0.02 or 0.03g so for it to still be 4g is a  bit suspect IMO...  Take it to a jewellers perhaps for authentication?

Was bought from Hatton garden metals as part of 5

It's 4g exactly, though it won't fit in a 19.5mm capsule unlike other half's and is obviously thicker as well

I've run a magnet over it and no problem with that

I think @Orpster may have mentioned this exact scenario on a half sovereign before, maybe he can advise.

Having half's very slightly exceeding 19.3mm is not unusual, especially Australian mint sovereigns from the turn of the century, never had an SA half like that before though.  Not getting any alarm bells looking at the picture of the reverse though it is concerning if it is larger in diameter and thickness, I would expect it to weigh a bit more if the difference is that discernible surely?

Post a picture of the obverse @Smiler999

Though I suspect now the suspicion is in your head you will always wonder if you keep it, so likely worth calling HGM and telling them your concerns.  They are a decent outfit so hopefully will be happy to exchange.

I asked a similar question recently regarding a 1914 Sydney half sovereign. The diameter was oversized, as yours is:

The coin turned out to be genuine so I kept it, so don't think being oversized automatically means counterfeit. Looking at your photos I can't see anything that indicates it's a forgery (disregarding it's size). If you aren't confident it's real then you could return it to HGM or, if you'd like to keep it, ask them to analyse it and send on the results.
