Off-centered color in Alice silver proof coin: mint error or fake?

NZcoins

Recommended Posts

Hi! I’m new here and have a question. I got two Alice in Wonderland silver proof coins from one eBay seller. One of the coins has the cat color off-centered (I hope the picture is clear). Could this be a mint error? Or it’s a fake coin? The other coin looks fine to me.

 Thanks for any comments/advice!

Thanks for your reply! I’m attaching more pictures. Coin 1 pictures are on the left. Coin 2 pictures are on the right. Both don’t look very sharp as the picture shown in Royal Mint website, but I assume the website only shows illustrative pictures instead of real pictures? I have no experience…

Comparing yours to others (real photos of graded coins I found from an image search) they do seem to be about right. The colour looks a little washed out on yours but that could be the difference in lighting/camera processing. Interestingly I saw one example where the cat is in the right place but Alice looks slightly off centre, so it's entirely possible it's the Royal Mint displaying their unrivalled quality control again. As these colourised coins are machine made as opposed to hand finished it's easy to imagine how this happened...

I would lean towards genuine, but that's only based on the photos and a ten minute hunt on Brave search. I could be in error.

Thank you so much again for your reply and help! It makes me feel much better now about buying coins in eBay :) (I was desperate to get this coin but couldn’t find it anywhere else…) I’m new to collection and it’s good to learn that the famous Royal Mint may possibly make this kind of mistakes :)

have you tried the obvious and weighed them and checked the dimensions

Thanks for the reminder! I didn’t weigh them but compared to the Through the Looking Glass coin I have. The sizes look the same. Will buy the tools for more accurate measurements.

Its likely to be poor strike by Royalmint. I have same issue (double outline) with Royalmint Music Legend Queen Collection Coins.

Thanks for the comment! Good to know that! :)

buying coins in eBay

I would still be wary of buying on eBay, try to stick to sellers that have unique looking feedback and always be prepared to weigh and measure the coins upon arrival. I personally wouldn't buy any pristine proof coins from there for that reason; handling these types of coins to get a caliper around them and onto a scale can be unnerving so the temptation is to just leave it and assume they're genuine. I would also note that I am basing my comments on my own experience and use of comparative photographs online, I could be wrong with my assessment.

If you're after a specific coin it is always worth posting a 'wanted' ad on TSF, there are many members on here with eclectic collections that don't necessarily sell but may do if they spot such an request.

Back to your issue; if it were me I would be contacting the seller and pointing out the issue. Can they prove where it originally came from? Do that have another that doesn't have the issue etc.
