Hello newbie here, a would be stacker and collector. I am wondering if anyone has come across these coins designed by Dali - 10 coins about 50g each,  .999 solid silver. Saw this one that went for auction at just under $1500: https://daliauctionwatch.blogspot.com/2011/05/dalis-ten-commandments-medals.html

What do members think, is that a reasonable price or are they worth less or more?

Thanks!

They are medal or medallions, not coins.

You might wish to refer to this:

Welcome aboard.

Are they worth it? Only you can answer that unfortunately.

They are nice in their own way, but I personally wouldn't pay €1500 euro for 500g of silver.

These are for a serious collector and you and only you can justify the value beyond intrinsic.

I like to buy the pre-dip rise.

I always used to call them medallions, but an expert numismatist called Daniel Fearon convinced me that they should be called medals.

He wrote this book:

This has always left me wondering how we should distinguish between commemorative or art medals, and military awards and decorations.

Well Daniel Fearon is welcome to have a chat with me and he can see some real medals. And I will happily educate him......

Take from the oxford english dictionary

a flat piece of metal, usually like a coin in shape, that is given to the winner of a competition or to somebody who has been brave, for example in war

  • to win a gold medal in the Olympics
  • to award a medal for bravery

Sir Billy Connolly was in 10 para in the TA.

I'll bet the entry in O.E.D. is much longer than that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal

A medal or medallion is a small portable artistic object, a thin disc, normally of metal, carrying a design, usually on both sides. They typically have a commemorative purpose of some kind, and many are presented as awards. They may be intended to be worn, suspended from clothing or jewellery in some way, although this has not always been the case. They may be struck like a coin by dies or die-cast in a mould.

It is worth reading the whole Wikipedia article.
