Dear all,

I have a few half sovereign shield backs dated 1887 and 1878.

theyvare in great condition but obviously I am biased and can get it wrong.

is grading worth it vs the cut all demand worth of these types of half sovereigns?

regard.

At a guess, probably not.  Dealers already seem to be able to charge a premium for ungraded shields already, so I'm not entirely convinced you'd really get much from having them graded.  If they're somewhere in the MS range it might be worth grading and flogging them but it's still hit or miss as to whether that would significantly add to their value unless it was a really rare or in-demand year.

Bear in mind that coins with a high numismatic premium can be harder than bullion to sell quickly while retaining the premium, so as a stacker holding high premium coins can be a bit of a liability.  If you're collecting graded coins that might be worth doing, but it's a clap shoot as to whether you'd actually get it back in a quick sale, making numismatics very hit and miss as an investment for a stacker.  If you've got a high premium coin you might be better off flogging it and reinvesting the money in more liquid run-of-the-mill sovs with a lower downside on sale.

Or, maybe just keep some nice coins and enjoy the classic design.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

If they are in great condition grade them 100% put some pictures of them up. An MS66 1887 sells for 2k easily.

I got a 1914 bullion half sov & graded a 66 which was finest which I sold for £1800.

See what you guys think

Can you take any better photos?

Any rim nicks, weak strike, poor fields, anything more than the very slightest wear to the high points, if they don’t have almost all of the original lustre then don’t grade them if you are seeking the very high MS grades.

Alternatively if you are just wanting to see how it works then stick a few of the ones that you think are the best ones, it’s away of confirming/training your eye for your future purchases.

It would be worth getting any sheld fron half sovereigns authenticated; they are extemely rare.

It would be more specific to say Jubilee Head halves, as Young Head halves are also shields.

Personally I wouldn't grade them in that condition. For an MS grade you will need alot better.

These are high grade examples I sold not too long ago.

What’s wrong with the 1887 one?
