Forum threads and etiquette

Does anyone else think the forum has gone a bit stupid with long threads of people talking rubbish when they are trying to sell or auction a coin ?

Here goes the next comment 

How many in a tube is it free postage and I would buy it but I'm skint

Those comments are better than fully paid up members who never buy or trade who just post conspiracy theory threads and wear silly tin foil hats ..

Seriously though, those comments are meant as fun to show new members that the place isnt full of stuffed up unicorns and coin snobs, its banter at the end of the day and harmless...

on a plus side though, if you have experienced members having these kind of comments such as great price/great deal/great coin, etc,  then new less experienced members can make more informed choices if they are looking to buy anything and some decent comments can actually help the sale and of course the comments keep it at the top of the sales threads for the seller..

Agreed, 'you don't know what you've got until it's gone!'

To mitigate the loss, I keep the Chard's website tab open to monitor the £/$ price and the site has its own compare function too.

Chris made it clear that gratuitous comments on seller threads are not allowed.
If a comment adds something positive then fine but stupid sh*t should be flagged and removed. 

Selling on the forum is a serious business as is posting on conspiracy threads. 

ps i have bought £10's and £10's of thousands of swag off the forum for my treasure chest - sadly of course it was all lost in a tragic boating accident.

i understand how it can, i tend to just look at the thread or listing and if its something i want i go for it and scroll past the other comments mostly, but it all depends on who the poster is too, a regular contributer who can have a lighthearted thread helps make the forum welcoming...

The sales threads could be tightened up, but it is up to us to report and flag anything outside the 'permitted boundaries'

Having said that the more paid up members the better, the forum needs to grow and evolve.

I admit I’ve indulged in silly banter every now and then (though not in any sales threads).

In good measure I think it humanises the forums and it’s nice to share a rapport with regular members. However, I see how it can be annoying too, so I’ll try to be more mindful of my own posting etiquette in future. 🙂

This is the reason I stopped my paid membership, bad for mental health continually thinking the world is against you. 

As for banter, it's ok but not in the sales section. I do feel sometimes it's like ant and deck have dropped in on a conversation.

I had a sale post totally derailed a few months back and I still have the item that I wish I’d sold.

It didn’t sell and the person who first commented, maybe didn’t realise but they started a load of unwanted comments.

If I don’t like an item for sale or it’s not for me, I scroll past. Commenting to admire what’s for sale is different.

I think a mutual respect/line has to be set for sale posts.

Here's my take on it ( not that anyone asked)

If ive personally upset someone and "assuming" I actually have? and they are not just a self absorbed know it all, whom happens to be steeped in "irony" then I sincerely apologise. If your out there feeling aggrieved, then please feel free to PM and I will sincerely listen and hopefully rectify the issue. 

My threads ( can only speak for me) seem to get a lot of noise, I never asked for it,nor do I covet it. I do though recognise that it's coming from a place of lighthearted jest and respond in the same way. I never worry if its effecting my sales as those that truly want to buy "will buy" I'm guilty of returning the favour on occasion 😅 but to only those I'm sure warrant it. 

I'm also guilty off maybe overwhelming a post by tagging people I've spoken to recently, or remember they maybe after a certain item? I know ive helped sales ,but that all stops now and everyone can fend for themselves.

As for cliques?? When I joined the forum there was an abundance of already formed "cliques" and it was quite off-putting, but I seem to have landed/fallen into a certain group of like minded people who can see life from a similar position. I would like to think this normal? And I certainly know that any new comer who attempts to interact with me/this group, is welcomed with open arm's. Cant say that about every clique?? Can a forum of over 18000 members all have the same personalities/traits? Highly doubtful.

I know from feedback during private messages or from purchases/sales, that I've made a positive entry into a members stacking/selling journey, whether it be holding items till payday, actually advising them its not the right item for them, advising on actual condition ( not the bullion bollocks that most hide behind) cutting costs and helping with postage,managing expectations, and try to deliver a rapid service, whether I'm paying or receiving payment.

My view is, If someone wants to buy my item, they will buy it. They won't even have the brain power to see the comments on the thread, their focus and determination will ensure they get a price and condition then message to purchase. How do I know this? Because its what goes through my mind when I see something that sings to my taste/wallet. I get condition and if the price is deemed acceptable in my tiny brain, then I buy and pay within ( sometimes seconds) I'm very aware of how valuable people's time is,so I make it as painless as possible. 

I do agree that sales posts do get messy at times, but I've also witnessed it helping sales in a positive manner. How this can be controlled/changed is up to the moderation team, pretty sure they already act on blatant attempts of sabotage though?

I've hand on heart never used the report function since joining, call me old fashioned but talking usually helps. 

Change maybe needed, but if so, then change is needed across the board?? Yes!

Fun is good, can be taken too far at times I agree, but I think the forum police's itself remarkably well. We need to be very careful we don't create a super sterile environment that feels like a library, we can't all buy every second of every day, so if the only thing to exist on the forum was sterile sales posts with no comments allowed, then I'm cancelling my membership and finding other outlets to aquire what I need ( I can get that non personal experience from dealers) 

By all means tighten up on absolute nonsense, but also tighten up on the complete bullshit that goes on too. Favouritism, misleading/unhelpful information. Complaining about things- deep down you know have no impact on your plan/day. Trying it on with pricing and hoping to catch a naive newcomer by the short and curlys? Insulting offers, Complaining about the forum only hurts the forum and will sabotage it's progression. many things should change but I'm voting against taking fun out of the equation.

We can "all" improve, but at least I know personally that I've done right by people ( with their interests at heart not mine) and have never been out to get anyone, if I have a problem, I will message to fix. If ive made a mistake and I either realise or have been made aware,I will message to fix.

I can see both sides and I'm well aware everyone hates a fence sitter so I'll clarify a bit more.

I think the tone should be set by the original poster, and respected by the rest of us. Those injected with some humour and banter are clearly inviting such responses and anyone that isn't a fan should skip and move on. Likewise, those that are selling seriously shouldn't have their threads overtaken by people bantering amongst themselves or leaving unnecessary/off-topic comments (and I've probably been guilty of doing this). I think most of this is just about context and reading the room a bit.

Some members may have already accumulated a few ounces before joining the forum, so probably do not see the need to buy or sell on here.

Beside, TSF being UK centric and not every member still resides in the UK. There are cheaper VAT-free PMs elsewhere.

Having said that, personally I rarely comment on sales posts. I do read them out of interest for PMs and to see what's on offer. The comments are usually one liners and can easily be skipped. I do not find them annoying unless there are too long.  I can understand why it can be distracting and annoying to some members particularly if the comment adds no value. I like to think that members who have been on the forum long enough should know the characters on here - who you can joke with etc.

I find the recent auctions humorous. Silly but fun 😂  and unlikely to be in everyone's taste.

I have agree that the forum should not become a sterile environment as it could become very boring.  There are members from all walks of life. Some likes certain topics more than others. Members who do not like those topics can simply skip them. No one has to waste time by reading through them. 

Overall, I find the forum fairly balanced. The core subject being about coins and precious metals. Then there are the fringe topics..........

PS. In writing all that, only +5 points towards my Grand Master badge. Are people commenting on sales threads just to gain easy points !!? 😂
