Not exactly news is it.  The coins will co-exist for years as per pre-decimalisation. Everyone will just have to speculate when the Charles coins will come out next year and for those of us who are the poorer forum members without RM account managers, will have to get ready to wait in line.🤔🫢

And the pre-decimal and decimal co-existed with the 5p's and 10p's with the 1 bob and 2 bob bit (or shillings).

What will the first coins be? 50p, £1 or sov?

depends on when they mint them but RM have said the 50p will be circulated.    no dates announced yet or about the annual set and if it will be QE2 or C3.

EDIT - BBC 6pm news headline said this year for the 50p.  when they turn up in banks etc that might be different, but given the hype to promote all the in memorium and all the other ***** they will try to shift, sorry, carefully crafted and quality checked coins,  they will prob send limited numbers out before the end of the year.

Unveiling the First Official Effigy of King Charles III
on a Coinage Collection Honouring
Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Today we are honoured to reveal the first official effigy of His Majesty King Charles III appearing for the first time on a memorial coin collection honouring the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.

At The Royal Mint, we have struck coins for the British monarchy for more than 1,100 years, and it has been our pride and privilege to strike every United Kingdom coin of Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable 70-year reign. It is our honour to now strike the first UK effigy of His Majesty King Charles III on a coinage collection honouring the life and legacy of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

Designed by British sculptor Martin Jennings and personally approved by His Majesty The King, the first definitive coinage portrait of the monarch appears on each new coin in the collection. In line with royal and numismatic tradition, His Majesty’s portrait faces left. Coins bearing portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III will both circulate in change for years to come.

On 3 October 2022, we are honoured to be releasing a special collection of memorial coins to mark this poignant moment in British history. Featuring one of three reverse designs, each new coin in the collection features the official coinage portrait of King Charles III. The UK 50p coin will also enter general circulation.

I must agree neither look enamouring to my mind. The younger portrait to my mind does not look a bit like she was.

Completely agree.

The younger one is unfamiliar and the older one looks closer but still won't ever be remembered for the right reasons.

Agreed, rather shoddy work with QEII designs. The 50p is kinda nice.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. - H.L. Mencken

I actually like the Charles portrait - as good as it gets for the oldest King to reach the throne. But now would have been a good time to get rid of the religious Latin inscription, despite tradition. D.G. REX. F.D. These titles were conferred on Henry VIII originally. Many will be asking what they mean - By the grace of God and Defender of the Faith, as we know, but there is a darker side to the use of Latin. It’s a reminder that the Roman Catholic Church insisted that the Bible could only be read in Latin and not translated into other languages especially English. Death was to be the punishment! The authoritarian and controlling attitude of the Roman Catholic Church seems to persist today IMO. So how about simply  “King Charles III”

Oh, by the way Who is Rex - One of his Mum’s Corgis?😃

In which why bother with “King” at all -> abolish the Monarchy? 😏

Yes, I agree! Unfortunately we are where we are, but I remember on a previous topic suggesting that QEII should be the last monarch, thus ending on a high note. But my opinions are based upon my aversion to religion and my  ‘deeply held views’ on Atheism. Plus I don’t want to get beaten up by Ladies from the W.I. wielding bouquets of flowers, as well as salt of the earth ordinary folk who love their Royalty!😀

I couldn't disagree more.

I'm a luke warm royalist. I see the flaws with the system - but the thought of a Republican system with celebrity or super rich presidents - and politically connected presidents, scares me frankly. It's just another nut and bolt in the WEF Great Reset, bankers and financiers taking over the whole world.

Monarchy is something they can't exactly control as you have to be born into it. Harder to buy your way in, not impossible, but tougher compared to politics.

I'm also a stickler for not throwing out old stuff just to be modern. I like the fact we can trace our history back in a tangible form. Also I like the Latin. I don't really see it as a Catholic Church thing (sure they used it big time) but they pinched it from the pagan Romans first.

I've no love for organised religions and ambivalent about faith more generally. I always side with the Vikings and the Pagans every time.

I've never liked God Save The King as the national anthem. Land of Hope and Glory or I Vow To Thee My Country would be far better in a more secular (multi-faith / republican) modern world.

Absolutely, for any fault or problem we could list or discuss about the monarchy all we have to do is look across the pond to observe arrogant, ignorant, self serving incompetent tosspots who'll do anything to be the leader of the gang.

Charles just so happened to be born into the role. No manipulation, bribery etc etc. Whether he wanted the job or not, it's his.

I certainly agree with @SidSre the anthem. How can you never like ‘God save the King’ after only 2 weeks? Have you sung it yet?  Maybe it’s time for a new anthem, fitting for the modern secular world we supposedly live in?  Every time I’ve heard ‘God save the Queen’ over the the years I’ve wanted to do a runner - It’s so boring!  especially starting with the word ‘God’…..

How about ‘Rule Britannia’ instead? Hey, That’s me - Yes,Yes!!😃😃

As national anthems go, God Save The Queen/King is not so bad.  My mother country has the second worst national anthem in the world, God Defend New Zealand, which is beaten out for the position of worst only by Advance, Australia Fair.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

I got some information on the coins late on Friday, all embargoed until 9am tomorrow apart from the information the Royal Mint have released. The prices have gone, the mintages are not clear for some of the coins. The coin on the left presumably is a design for the 1/4 - 1oz - 2oz versions, does anyone know or mixture of designs similar to the 95th birthday coins?
