Investing in Pokemon cards

Recommended Posts

Hello Im starting to expand my tangible & collectible assets & I constantly hear about Pokemon cards.
Can any one give me an idiots guide to investing in these things, mainly the top ones to look for & where to get them please.

Other information relating to quality, correct storage or what ever would also be valuable,
but I guess they are just cards at the end of the day and not a bottle of vintage wine. :)

There was a thread about them already if I remember rightly... I'm sure someone can link to it?

Oh OK - I did look but it just came up with a load of for sale posts. :)
Link would be handy.

Investing in Pokemon cards...

... sounds like an oxymorin to me...

... but then

Princess Diana’s one-of-a-kind Ford Escort sells for £650,000 at auction

As it was only about  £8,500 new, it might qualify as a good investment.

When the media take out key members of royalty, it kind of makes me a bit less paranoid that they are all part of an evil elite.
Kid off hope that they just want to sell papers & keep advertisers happy by scaring and creating dross stories like that?

Who controls the news papers is my next question. ;)

Be careful, There's a lot that's not worth the paper they are printed on. Condition is absolutely everything also. This month 💩 next month 🚀🌙 oh no 💩 again. The eldest daughter was in to MTG, so for one Christmas I decided to buy collections, Take out one of each card for the different sets and resell the rest. I'd check the values and sell any duplicates over £5 separately. She ended up with a massive collection that cost me about £100 for the folders and the wood to make the cabinet I made to house the collection and the cards cost almost nothing due to the reselling, but quite a bit of time. About 7 months of buying and selling. Her reaction was the best though on Christmas day. She has entered them in to a collection and price tracking web site. At one time her collection was valued at over £10,000 but it has been as low as £1,600. She loves the game and has said she would never sell but I thought it would illustrate the massive swings in the price, and of course, you have to sell the to realise the cash. This would attract fee's that would need to be taken into account along with your time.

Think I ‘invested’ in the wrong cards. I’ve got the original set of wizards of the coast Harry Potter trading cards. Pristine in sleeves etc so hopefully they’ll be worth a bit to the right buyer

Unsure if anyone cares but the reprint of the charizard Ultra premium collection has caused its resale to fall. I believe its well worth a buy and hold strat. If not you can crack it open with 3 promo cards and grade them.

I have purchased one to crack open and grade the promos.

You usually can’t lose on Charizards.

@MancunianStacker incase you are interested mate.

Excuse my complete ignorance, but what is this and why could it be valuable?

@Stacktastic

No this is a newer release.

basically for a quick understanding.
Most investment grade pokemon stuff does best when it is of charizard.

this is the charizard ultra premium collection.
Sets alone with charizard available to pull in packs are more expensive on the secondary market.

This comes with three guaranteed charizard promos. All great artwork.

I think to buy this and keep sealed is a no brainer.

Timescale is a hard one. I have kept some pokemon since 2016 sealed and only realised gain 4 years later.

Yes that is the product

The higher value stuff interests me as i dont want a suit case full of them.
Nice to purchase the odd thing on sale or cheap as and when it comes really.
Out of interest what else if out there and is retail the cheapest way to buy this stuff?? :)

Following some detailed research Im probbaly on board on this.

One question - will this sell out quickly?

This yeah??

The first release sold out quickly and had big premiums on ebay. I imagine the reprint will take time and then slowly increase in price.

its hard to say mate. I usually do well because I have a good knowledge in a few areas i have researched indepth. But i always buy a small amount of everything and then some do well the others just stay sitting until they can do well.

Right now in Pokemon I think that would be your best investment product you may be able to snipe one for £100 on ebay.

There is also buying vintage graded cards. I don’t do this but a lot of people do.

The main goal is to buy sets with cards that are desirable so when the print run finishes people will pay a premium to try pull it.

For a bit of research @Stacktastic find out the exact card name of those 3x promos and find them on ebay graded as a 10. Now same as grading coins it is not a given but you will see the reward that is there.

Bought 2 boxes in the end. £104 each.
