Cleaned Gothic Florin & New Cam!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I recently posted my gothic florin in the "Today I Received" post and some folks mentioned it might not be worth grading due to it looking as though it had been cleaned. That might very well be the case but given that my photographs have been shocking, I thought I'd buy a new macro lens and give that a go so perhaps these next pics will be interesting in a few ways! Firstly, if the enhanced quality can help you eagle-eyed numismatists out there to let me know if you reckon it's been cleaned, it'd be much appreciated (I'm trying to learn how to spot cleaned coins). Secondly, for those interested, I took the pics with an old iPhone 8 and a macro lens bought on Amazon - looks good to me so I'm finally happy to be able to take decent pics :D

By the way, the pics are full resolution so if you click/expand them you should get a load more detail!

Cheers!

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.

Nicely detailed photos!  Regardless of grading it looks like an old style Good EF to me. The shiny field on the obverse may be construed as ‘cleaned’ or it could be natural circulation wear and scratches etc. Ideally it should have the same surface as the reverse, which I think is superb by the way, appearing to be untouched.  I still have a few Victorian silver pieces, of which half have good toning, whilst the field on others are still a bit reflective. Used to have a ‘godless’ florin but never a gothic. Not easy to read the date though on your 1858! Good luck with your photos - I get good pics with an IPhone 11….

Full marks for you two. 1858 is correct! ;)

@Britannia47 Really appreciate your comments regarding the coin's condition. The shiny obverse field is definitely the part which had me wondering but it's interesting to read it's something you've noticed in other coins. I can't think why someone would only bother to clean that particular area and leave the rest untouched but who knows. I'm pleased you like the pics because I'd struggled to get anything decent before buying the macro lens! Glad I can finally share nice details without having to spend a fortune on a fancy phone/camera..
