Also one of my reports said Mr bullyun sets very low standards and very regularly fails to achieve them. Always in poo, just the depth varies!😁

Backgammon is my game 🙂

I do play occasionally, and used to play for £1 a point many years ago. I almost always won, although most gamblers say and believe that.

I was always aware that I was not up to professional hustler standard, just better than 99% or 99.9% of the population, which is not saying much.

Some years ago, our son Duncan and I had a match, after he had read a number of backgammon books, which were more recent than the ones I had read. He won, and I have not played since. (Self proclaimed bad sport!).

Years before that, when I had read how to play, but never played a proper game, we were at the Ideal Home Exhibition in London. Crockfords had a stand, with backgammon boards set out. There was also at least one very attractive young hostess, who smiled and asked me if I would like to play with her (or words to that effect). She may have asked had I ever played before, and I answered her. She had to help me set the board up properly, and remind me which direction we were playing. We did use the doubling cube, but were not playing for money.

I won about 5 straight games, (with more than my share of luck), then she made an excuse, got up, and left. My guess is that she thought I was winding her up.

All I took away from that was "asked me if I would like to play with her"

Yeah, we can do that too - not in gold though 🙂

Do you ever plan to pour gold pieces? Or is it too cost prohibitive/probably little upside.

Yeah, basically all of the above.

In addition I would need a completely new mould made just for gold and also a completely new furnace just for gold. To ensure assay testing and hallmarking

To be fair, if making a £150,000 half of a chess set these costs would be relatively small when compared!

Then there is risk/reward. Pouring gold is good, but to buy, pour and post £150,000 worth of gold is very different than silver!

Yeah i understand,  and now appreciate it would be less fun/more pressure when pouring.

Sorry for for any confusion but I was more thinking along the lines of say 1/2oz or 1oz ripple bars or celtic designs, rather than £150.000 chess arrangement 😆

The closet thing I have to a chess set this unique is one hand carved out of glacial green marble (mostly white) and onyx that I received when I was 15 years old. Something like the set above would make me the center of jealousy among all my chess playing relatives.

Could do a polished and antiquated finish maybe? Or smooth and ripple?

Yeah, totally.

I would say polished and antiqued is more appropriate, the ripples are only on the bases and therefore not really visible when playing.

I have toyed with the idea of highly polishing one sides actual pieces though.

Would take a long time and time adds costs, but definitely doable

What would look really cool would be a polished and hammered set. That would be a striking combination imho

I have tried a hammered finish - unfortunately all it does is bend the pieces!

999 silver is very malleable!

It is a shame because it would look great!

Aaah sorry, I'm meaning for the backgammon pieces as they're flat disks. I think as you have the current chess pieces is the best!
