How to charge for valuation of a Hord?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I came across a little hord from a few friends and from the outset I know there are a few very nice pieces. Yes a gothic 1947 crown included!!! ;)

I am interested particular in how I may price a service for them.

I am not keen to spend hours of time categorising them at no charge especially if giving them a true value.

Would you charge a percentage of sales value?

would you ask if they want to sell or not up front?

How how someone work with this with a fare value in mind. I want to charge a fair fee and give a clear value on their coins.

Some lovely coins, although sold priced may fluctuate wildly. Might be worth taking them to a specialist dealer, many offer free valuations.

Maybe obtain prices for a hand full from your own research and see how much the difference is between your valuation and the dealers.

Could save you lots of time and the dealer may make a nice offer.

I would have no problem with charging maybe 25% of the difference between true value and a dealers offer !

If these were appraised by a dealer they would more than likely be graded harshly and the book price from a 2005 yearbook used for values (maybe an exaggeration but not much of one)...

It's a lot of work grading and comparing book prices with actual sales.

Some lovely Crown in the lot, Gothic Crown n Wreath Crown.  Also some interesting Halfcrown as well.  I am sure those will attract many interests if clearer individual pictures are posted.

By the way, which year is the Maundy set?

It depends on the purpose of the valuation, to sell to a dealer, a private sale, insurance or perhaps to split between friends or family members.

This would determine how accurate you needed to be and how much work you would need to put in.
