Good Day folks, My name is Matt I'm new to the forum but not to silver. I love coins and an looking into pouring my own silver now that I've seen it done. It's always nice to enjoy a piece you made. That's what I'm looking to begin.

Anyway I'm here to find out if I have something or if it's fake. There are a few coins in here that sparked my interest. There's some Third Reich coins and Russian kopecks and ruble coins. I'm not a racist just wanted to own a piece of history. Especially as piece of history with a large lesson. But there's a few I saw on the back that I'd never seen ever.

In the pictures enclosed you'll see. I looked the one up and It seems to be a coin during the reign of Oliver Cromwell in which would be not only fascinating but make this a coin collection of all fascist nation-states. Excepting the few US and Mexican coins. Please if anyone has any knowledge on these I would be most appreciative. Especially if it's real. I know it's def. Real silver. There's also a 2 sen coin from Meiji Japan I would like to know anything about. Thank you all for your time,

Matt

I fear this is a modern reproduction.  They can be found on eBay for £7.99.

It’s hard to say, I often see lots like this where they will put a fake rare coin in with several legitimate coins in an attempt to bump up the value. Normally the real coins are just base metal. House clearance coins finds 😂

Where did you acquire these from?

eBay for like $30 for the whole album. No one else bid on on it. How can I determine if any of these are legitimate. I have no LCS near me.

Edit: yeah the coin had no coin edge either it is smooth. Plus I looked it up and all the Oliver crowns have an 8 over 7. This one is a perfect 8 so idk. It is real silver though. I was thinking of just adding in to a pour I will eventually do.

As the old saying goes normally if somethings to good to be true….

There may well be some legitimate coins there, the ones that are supposed to be silver can you you verify the size and weight to check they’re correct. Do they have that silver ‘ring’ sound, maybe post individual pictures of coins and some members can give you more insight. As they’re mostly foreign coins its not really my area. There’s some helpful members here and sure someone can be of assistance with extra pictures…

The ring for me is unmistakeably silver. Long ring and high pitch. Even a slight tap causes that wonderful beautiful sound. At least that's my take. I know it def. Can't be authentic but I'm about 80 - 90% sure it's silver.

So what you're saying is that there is 10-20% possibility of being wrong and it could be fake.   IMHO, I certainty don't like those odds if it was me!

It is very likely the rest of the coins are genuine, just that they are base metal coins with very little value. Some of them could still be silver, e.g. the German 2 mark and Mexican peso, but even so they wouldn't likely be worth too much above their melt value.

All in all, I would say the price you paid for this lot is just about right, if you like the coins from a collector's point of view. I would not expect anything really valuable in there, but I couldn't recognise all the coins so I would recommend that you do your own research with the help of e.g. Numista online catalogue, which will give you an indication of the coins' values.

As well as trying the ring test, try the magnet test too! Neodymium Rare Earth Magnet

I knew it was too good to be true. It is silver though... At least I'm sure of that. Are the restrikes silver too?

Or on AliBaba and the 40 thieves for about £2.

How do you @Mattaphysics know it is real silver?

I wish I had the skill to "ping" a coin, and instantly know its silver content.

It would have saved me a lot of time, not to mention the cost of buying an XRF machine.

Of course I would not be content with just that, I would hope it would tell me the exact silver content to the nearest part per thousand, and the same for gold, platinum, palladium, and all the base metals.

Perhaps I should have listened more during music lessons back in school?

One skill that I seem to have been blessed with though, is the ability to spot a fake/replica/reproduction coin from a couple of photos, from over 3,000 miles away.

Yeah I think I need to work on my listening skills. I play musical instruments but still am in having a hard time correctly knowing the exact pitch of the ping. But Yes like you say the other coins are simple not too expensive coins. I like the lot all in all just it would be nice to make like 10,000% on my investment.

I have found that there is a '25 stonewall half dollar and it is fake. Weighs 14 and some change grams and it's supposed to be a 12.something gram coin. There is a '76 S Kennedy proof that I think is legit. Not an expensive coin but red book has it at like $13 which means it'll probably go for half that. Then there is every denomination of 1960-90's USSR coins which is fascinating. I really enjoy it and it came in a Cyrillic album so that was cool. I think there is a silver Nepal 1 rupee coin but it's diameter is off. This numista site... Jimminy Crickets is it amazing. I could spend hours. Oh one coin I'm not sure about that doesn't seem like it would be a heavily reproduced coin in it is a Meiji Dynasty 1876 2 sen bronze coin. It looks circulated and like it was in a fire or something as a part of one side is blackened. Now if it is legit that plus the third Reich coins are good enough for me to be pleased with. If you look at the first. 2 pics it is in the bottom right corner. There is also on the other side a Russian 1 ruble from 1964.

@Mattaphysics, I see you are located in NY.  There must be lots of local coin shops or bullion dealers in NY who could help you verify your coins.   You mentioned earlier that there are no LCS near you.  Unfortunately, in order to determine if your coin set is genuine, you'll need to make the time and effort and go to a LCS.   I understand if work, time commitments, etc. doesn't allow you to travel.  But if finding the truth is important to you, you need to make the effort.

@SilverStorm@ Yes sir that would be true if I were in the city but I'm in upstate... People tend to forget there's a whole other landmass that is the actual state. Even though it's the City that runs the whole state, but anyway I live in an area where there are more cows in the area than people. Finding any kind of specialty shop like such isn't as easy as you may think. There's pawn shops which if you build a rapport with the owner he will help you out. Mostly around me are franchise pawn shops so there's just people that work there and their specialist on such items is not in the area which is the case for me. The nearest coin shop is approx. 45 mins away from me. It's difficult out in the country but I love it.
