Royal Mint Gold Proof Wooden Packaging

Hi All

I would be interested in what people think of the Royal Mint packaging for 2022 Sovereigns (and similar coins).

Personally, I am not a fan of the shiny (presumably) veneered boxes.  They remind me of high gloss car veneers in the 80’s and 90’s.  They are also magnet for scratches and I suspect chipping and  delaminating in time.

My preference (by far) would be an English Oak / Ash box, with no laquer, and much in the vein of those produced by @Alun which are in my opinion far superior.

Am I alone on disliking the RM boxes?

There is a Blackpool company, in South Shore, whose name comes to mind.

I need to be careful to avoid self-promotion, but @ChardsCoinandBullionDealer have no connection with this company apart from the close proximity.

I can't guarantee that their products will meet @dicker requirements, though!

Are you sure there is no connection ?! With the gold and funny girls you've got the vices covered and then this lot to cover any overindulgence ? 🤣

Agreed, but that's probably to do with our age :D

Hardly anyone sits at a dining table these days either.

I like the early Britannia boxes with the brass sprung push button, it reminds me of opening specialist engineering tools, like a micrometer.

and thumbs up for the @Alun idea, I wish he'd make it more than a hobby 😉

I guess none of you are familiar with the cardboard boxes supplied with 1950 and 1951 UK proof sets, or the 1951 crowns?

It was post-war "Utility".

I had not seen these before, very basic!

Bring back very basic please (with caps though). The large presentation boxes need to be stored somewhere safe and I like my store small and compact.

How about a boxless proof issue and we can choose our own packaging?

I think that is a very fair point.  Many chose to grade and the box is essentially surplus at that point.

I dislike the boxes at the best of times and chose alternative storage.

How's about a cardboard type box option and knock the cost of the wooden box off the RRP....

Personally i think the current shiny box packaging is an indicator of how much the RM believe their own legend. It's a coin not the crown jewels.

It's hilarious when you open the outer packaging, then the next lot of packaging, then the padding and final the shiny wooden box.... to find the capsule open and the coin rattling about :(

Yes, it is rather pretentious, but I am sure it appeals to many people.

I believe they may have solved the problem of "the capsule open and the coin rattling about", by inserting a piece of bubble wrap or foam.

High tech, heh!

You’ve raised a very good point.

The boxes are finished in a sprayed high gloss lacquer but they aren’t burnished (polished). I worked in this field a few years ago. My guess is that they are finished with a polyeurethane high gloss lacquer (sprayed). These aren’t cheap to produce.

Despite my knowledge on this I think they would be better in, as you suggest, an oak box. But I don’t dislike the boxes they come in.

I’d be more interested to know what wood the boxes are, I think we can rule out Mahogany, Walnut or Cherry wood maybe?

Does anyone know?

There should be a premium capsule, airtight, polarised or low reflection, scratch resistant.    There might be some kind of polymer that has these properties I know sapphire glass does (don't instantly jump down my throat for suggesting glass)  It could be one option.

The box for me is not the biggest issue, I do prefer wood as it dose not show up finger marks as much, the black RM cases are simply a finger print magnet.

There's a joke in this "what does David Beckham and proof sovereigns have in common,  they both come in posh boxes"😂😂😂

The old ones are always the best.
