🇫🇷🌟 For sale here is a scarce gold 20 Francs 1831-B of unknown mintage! 🌟🇫🇷

Minted in Rouen, capital of the northern French region of Normandy, in the year of 1831, this gold 20 Francs boasts the younger, bare head effigy of Louis-Philippe I and is a scarce year of unknown mintage.

Louis-Philippe I was King of the French from 1830 to 1848 and was the last King of the French. As with many great European figures and leaders, Louis-Philippe came to prominence commanding military troops during the Revolutionary Wars. After strong connections were drawn between Louis-Philippe and a plot to restore the French Monarchy, Louis-Philippe fled to Switzerland in the year of 1793. Louis-Philippe's father, Louis-Philippe II, was executed and Louis-Philippe remained in exile for 21 years until the Bourbon Restoration.

The July Revolution of 1830 saw the abdication of Charles X and the proclamation of Louis-Philippe I as king. It is for this reason that Louis-Philippe I's reign is known as the July Monarchy.

The 20 Francs gold coin on offer here presents you with the opportunity to acquire a scarcer type of an early year, minted only one year after Louis-Philippe became King Louis-Philippe I of France.

Please note that there are two types of 20 Francs 1831-B. There is an 'edge raised' and an 'edge incused' type. The lettering is the same around the edge of both types, but the means by which it is physically presented around the edge is different. On the 'edge raised' type the lettering 'DIEU * PROTÉGE * LA * FRANCE' protrudes from the edge and can be felt by running your finger across it. On the 'edge incused' type the lettering 'DIEU * PROTÉGE * LA * FRANCE' is stamped or recessed into the edge and cannot be felt by running your finger over it.

The mintage of the 'edge incused' type is 88,184 whereas the mintage of the 'edge raised' for sale here is unknown. The Numista rarity index of this coin is fairly conservative at 65, but the Numista frequency is only 6%.

As mentioned, the obverse of this coin features a young, bare head effigy of King Louis-Philippe I and the words 'LOUIS PHILIPPE I. ROI DES FRANÇAIS.,' the English translation of which is 'LOUIS PHILIPPE I. KING OF THE FRENCH.' The engraver's mark is at the bottom part of the neck of Louis-Philippe's bust and reads 'TIOLIER,' indicating that the engraver is Nicolas-Pierre Toilier.

The reverse of this piece shows the denomination of 20 Francs and is flanked by a crown of laurel. The mintmark indicates that this coin was minted in Rouen.

All-in-all, this is a good example of the type and not one which is particularly easy to acquire. This would be an ideal addition to a date run of these coins or a simple addition to any collection where an earlier, scarcer example will be appreciated.
