Counterfeit Australia Lunar Series 2

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anybody has come across any fake lunar series 2 silver coins, apart from the 1oz horse that seems to be regularly counterfeited.

Anybody come across any other years or sizes (0.5 / 1 / 2 / 5 / 10oz) that have been counterfeited?

Thanks very much.

D

I personally haven't come across any, but judging by the counterfeit horses they shouldn't be to hard to spot, some of the fake pandas on the other hand are pretty much perfect including the weight, I think all the mints should up the anti, the 2014 maple is a great step forward.

Yes Garth, counterfeiters haven't managed to copy the milk spots yet!!!!

I agree, the fake lunar 1oz horses are pretty poor copies and very easy to spot, think it may be the frosted field that stumps them on the lunars.

Based on the prices some lunar S2 go for though, I'm surprised they haven't cottoned on and started faking them.

Haha never thought of milk spots being an anti counterfeiting measure, maybe the canadian mint are onto something, it's true though milk spots are another way to spot legit silver.

I'm sure if the silver price goes up we'll see more and more fakes, I think the answer is buy from a dealer you can trust.

I completely agree in principle Garth, but unfortunately with Lunar Series past dates that's generally not possible.

You are forced to buy from eBay and forum members you have not dealt with before, hence the reason for this thread.

If there are known dates / sizes being faked it means I can be more cautious when purchasing these particular coins.

This is where collecting gets difficult, and stacking from trusted dealers is far safer (but more boring in my eyes).

Yeah good point Danny, it can be difficult finding earlier dates from dealers and when you do they're normally expensive.

I just did a search to see if I could find any lunar series fakes, a came across this dragon,  looks a lot better than the horse but still not perfect...

Good find Garth, it does look like a much better fake than the horse, but the queen is just laughable!!!

So that's two to watch out for now then!!!

Yeah the Queen's so poor, problem is if the dragon was the only photo I not sure I could tell the difference, definitely another one to look out for...

Same here, it may be time to start studying the pictures a little closer!!!

I wonder, why do certain coin types not give that typical silver sound (the sound test)?

For ex, all my 90% junk clearly give that typical high pitched and long ring. ASE's, CML's, WP's too. But Lunar's don't. For ex I have all weight versions of a lunar, and none give it. The higher mass of for ex a kilocoin could maybe explain the absence of the ring sound, since it requires more energy to vibrate a bigger mass (just a theory, don't know), but the 1 ounce should at least do. Mine don't. And one may expect the larger diameter (45.6mm) so thinner coin to vibrate easier.

Are there any other coins with a similar frosted finish you can try?

That's what I thought too, aside of kilocoins I only have a couple 1oz, and 1 of each other weights (1/2 2 5 10). They all give a short'TOOINK' instead of a long 'RIIIIIIING'. And they're bought from different sellers. I doubt that they are fake, only that it's hard to think of another explanation for it.

Maybe I need to buy some equipment to test in a more sure way.
