they on about having to return the whole coin for a ****ing capsule lol

Just replace it simple job done.

Awk ffs that's just plain moronic.....like you would trust them to take your good coin out of a bad capsule and lovingly place in New capsule.

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

I was today years old when I found this out. Do you mean it fits on to the lid?

No, I discovered this tonight, if you take the middle bit out of the box, where the coin is. Watch out though, those pesky capsules don’t stay shut!!

Look at the side where it’s angled and you’ll see two red looking spots on the removable centre. It stands up inside the bottom of the box!!

I was looking at mine again tonight and it tilted and I thought, oh it’s stuck on something. No it wasn’t, it’s magnetic!! 😆

I’v glad I’m not the only one who didn’t know this. Now, if only they’d make the capsules magnetic maybe some of us wouldn’t have cause to complain.

If anyone is looking for the odd replacement capsule, its always worth sending me a PM, I keep the old screw type ones in stock, its a shame they don't quite fit the new boxes. I could probably also find some of the new click together type.

They should not make you return the coin just for a capsule anyway.

Kind offer.

Anybody who wants a quantity of capsules, the Royal Mint sells some sizes of the push type capsules.  I'm not sure if they will fit the Sovereign Proof presentation cases.

If you buy the ones that are in the bullion category, they will have free postage until this black Friday nonsense is all over.

I have seen that, but I am not sure they are the same as the ones they use in their sets or just ones you can buy off the shelf?

They don't sell any of the screw type capsules at all.

You might well be correct- I'll edit my post above, as I haven't bought any to test them out however, the Sovereign caps listed here look very similar to the Sovereign capsules in the sets:

They haven't sold any screw caps for a long time.

I bought a pack of the sovereign cases yesterday funnily enough, and they arrived today. They look the same but I haven't tried them in the boxes yet.

Do lets us know, its just concerning they show the Lighthouse cases on the same pages, and the old RM capsules didn't fit in them you could not shut the lid?

I have had a look at my coins under 10x loupe. Looks like multiple scratches on the capsule not on the coins. Question is, why the Francis can they not sort this out? They are making a very big markup from retail price.

instead of doing a few surveys, the mint are needing to employ a few well placed individuals who will tell them where they are going wrong. I.e. package your goods properly and stop using cheap s****.

I have pre empted them sending mine by bombarding them with the same request for tightly fitted capsules and tape or selotape put on the capsules. Everytime they reply, I reply…..

My persistence and insistence appear to be paying off. I received this email yesterday. The RM needs to pull its socks up and take their promises of quality control far far more seriously than they have been doing. We shall see whenever the coins arrive. These are not returned coins. These are coins I have yet to receive the first time. It is like dealing with naughty children. I have to sit on the RM to make sure they do it right. The RM staff responsible for overseeing the qc and senior management should be ashamed of themselves. Complete disgrace that the buyer is forced to do their jobs for them.

My advice is, do not let the RM get away with this. Email, make requests, insist, be persistent. Be polite but very firm. And then do it as many times as is necessary.

You are looking at someone who spent 7 hours on the phone (from abroad) not letting BT get away with any bs (phone call cost me nothing btw). I started the conversation just after lunch and ended it down the pub later that day ;)

Are any of you thinking of grading your proof sovereigns?

If so, would you go with NGC or PCGS?

It's personal preference, for me if there was a PCGS submission office in the Uk I would have used them.  The deciding factor for me and others have their own, in the state of geopolitics I did not want to send my coins to Paris, I would lose my shizzle if the French  blocked the ports or all went on strike for 3 months.

I prefer PGSG slabs, NGC is more convenient as I can drop off and arrange own collection.

Cheers

I have bought numerous items from The Royal Mint over the years and have seen many of the same issues a lot of you have had.  Capsules opened with loose coins in the box, bad packing material, and bad coin manufacturing that makes you wonder how they could have passed QC inspection.  I've had to return items twice, once for a silver proof set where literally half the coins had scuffs in the mirrored fields going almost entirely around the outer edge of the coins.  And believe me, the thought of having to return an item to the UK from California is something I dread.

Buying items from the U.S. Mint is a similar experience.  Ever increasing premium price hikes, defective manufacturing, crappy QC inspection, and especially with U.S. Mint - absolutely cheap sh*t presentation boxes this last year on even the most expensive gold items.

The reason I mention all this?  I truly hope the emails to customer service reps and execs you guys have sent resolve your issues to your satisfaction.  I'm sure the people you have contacted do want to make you happy.  But I've come to believe the bean counters that ultimately choose policy for The Royal Mint and U.S. Mint are not going to go back to more expensive quality capsules, better boxes, or spend money in better training for their employees, unless the sales revenue of the Mint goes down.  Decreased sales is the only thing that will get their attention and that isn't going to happen with valuable assets like collector coins being the hot items they are these days.  I see buying directly from the Mints is increasingly going to be a c**p shoot where you hope you get a problem free quality item.  I hope I'm wrong.

Agreed. Yet, most if not all for-profit companies work like this, don't they. By my own experience the 'bean-counters' are notoriously poor at assessing reputational damage, herculean after-sales efforts required and the sheer mounts of abuse customer service workers and yes, even sales people at the front line are accustomed to. There are all sorts of NPS (net-promoter score) and other metrics that marketing departments love to deploy, yet they often lead only to glossier brochures and more superlatives on the website, not to anything as mundane as an improvement to the actual product or packaging. If I were a product manager at the RM I'd insist on a bleeping shrink wrap around each proof capsule so that they darn well stay closed until they reach the customer. (Available for hire. Hint hint, RM. 😅

Also, as I pointed out on the deals thread, you can buy these with free postage currently - even if you only want a single one!

Sweet, thats good to know.

I could do with a new Quintuple Capsule and unless I am being blind they don't seem to have that one listed - 36.05mm I believe is the size.

I had my hopes up too - went to look for one, alas, no luck. 😔

Wow that’s a very noticeable defect. It’s ridiculous that this coin passed a QC check.

Currently building my silver stack so looking for Kooks, Koalas, Eagles & Pandas

Outside of silver I also run a technology YouTube channel http://youtube.com/thenorthernblogger
