First 'big boy' graded PF70 ive seen offered out for sale in the wild thus far - £5495

Got a watch on it, see if it sells

Looks like the listing ended so don't know if it sold. That is strong money they are asking but I guess it has a lot going for it in terms of collectability, I think in future they could certainly be worth that sort of money, I certainly hope so.

I'm waiting for mine to come back from grading then I have to decide what to do. I only really bought the set for the quintuple so may sell the rest to lower my outlay, if they grade well and the markets the same as the jubilee coins I could get my quintuple down to near bullion price.

If I can do that then I'd be well placed to repeat the process for the Coronation sov.

Am I being stupid or does that actually sound like a good plan?

 Quoted for posterity...🤣

I’m not afraid to shout it from the rooftops. 😆

But for real, the guy knows how to blend intricacy with elegance. I’d love for him to return to the Royal Mint, or at least be commissioned to design more of their coins again.

He's certainly good at what he does, big fan of his work too however I did just look up a picture of him...I'm afraid I wouldn't.

Ahh it's all in good humour, a coin collecting forum could be a bloody boring place if we couldn't have a bit of a laugh and go off topic on occasion. Though not as off topic as the degenerates in the actual off topic section, that's a dark, weird place

Reported for slander, unless you're on about another dark place, in which case unreported..

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

I am truly appalled by the RM's incompetence and complete disregard for their customers.

This morning I phoned CS to to return my 4-coin set which, after 3 weeks in my hands is still not showing in my account, other than the "placeholder"  which those bought via account managers have been shown as since launch. OK she sorted it, but then asked why I still have outstanding "orders" for a 3-coin set and a full sov, still showing as "placeholders".
"Oh" she said, "I will check up on those, give me a few moments as nothing is coming up when I detail search them".
True enough, a couple of minutes later she came back "I'm afraid those haven't been minted yet and we have no information about when they will be. Feel reassured they will be sent to you as soon as they are minted" !!!
I am truly gobsmacked, she did apologise profusely but that only emphasises how bad they are, she sounded like she is no stranger to having to apologisse to disatisfied customers.

So, 4 and a half months after selling them, they still haven't minted them all. What a bunch of cowboys.

I did get told an interesting fact while on to CS today. She said they hold the coin at arm's length and if a defect is visible by naked eye they accept it as defective. Otherwise, it's good!

A bit "industrial" IMO😁

I just gone through 10, 3 coin sets and every one has its qtr sov out of position, terrible!

Yep my quarter sov was at a 'jaunty' angle in the capsule aswell, maybe a disgruntled employee was making a protest when they were packing them that day, but I guess my quality issues could have been a lot worse from what I've seen reported here

Got another memorial three coin set from @Chards.  Full and quarter sovs seem fine but serious frosting issues with the half - never had a coin that bad in terms of frosting holes / issues before - usually dings, scratches and debris!

@Chards doesn't appear to be live... use @ChardsCoinandBullionDealer to get their attention.

I’ve had similar problems with my three coin set from them - quarter is fine but half and full both got a lot of frosting damage! Options I have been given are refund or can return the set and wait for more stock, but no date given as to when that will be. I was under impression Chards quality checked all products before sending…?

I've had 3 sets now and have also only had issues with full & half sovereigns. I think the third set is pretty much all good except for a small frosting issue on the half sovereign.

You highlighted the reason why I prefer to go straight through the Royal Mint when purchasing proofs. The odds are that there will be issues, and I'd rather just cut the middle-man when managing exchanges.

We have had a couple of sovereigns back, and one qtr sovereign, unlike the RM we exchanged the coins within a week. I would support the other dealer mentioned in that we need to check a lot of these coins and its really difficult to spend a huge amount of time on every single coin to make sure it has 100% of its frosting. Most of us do our very best, as these originally come from the RM, customers who buy from third parties are getting 2 quality checks.

In the RM's defence, I've now exchanged three different orders in the past month and have had all sets back within a week. That's not so much the issue for me, it's the fact that when something does slip through whatever quality control the dealers has, I tend to just prefer dealing directly with the mint. I may be wrong about that, but it's just what I've always done, and it's an expensive mistake to make if a dealer doesn't agree with why something needs exchanging.

An update on my five sovereign piece BU matt finish order:

15 November - ordered from RM

8 December - received the email saying they are experiencing delays

11 February - received the email saying that it will be despatched by early April at the very latest

Today (29 March), I have received an email saying that it has been despatched and will arrive by 1pm tomorrow.

Four and a half months after ordering, I will finally receive my coin!  It had darned well better be perfect...

(holds breath, crosses fingers...)😄

my  BU matt finish has arrived very disappointed:

1. The BU 2022 queen version sovereign looks  very different from its Proof version, probably because there is lots of empty space. but this Memorial BU feels the same with the proof.

2. lots of quality issues both back and front 😭

Question: Is BU version generally less well received by the market than the proof version?  how did the 2022 BU sovereign do? Thinking to refund rather than replacement.

Also, what's the market price for the 5 coin memorial proof set now?

I'd say these are a long hold investment tbh. If you're not happy with the quality of them then I'd say return them. Refund or replacement is up to what you plan to fo with them. Keep and hold, grade or flip. These big ticket items do come with a lot of stress so good luck with whatever you decide.

I'm reasonably happy with the quality of my coin which arrived today, fortunately I seem to have received a good one from the RM.

But I am slightly underwhelmed by how it looks, even in the large size.  I have the bullion sovereign and double sovereign in the Memorial design and I was expecting the quintuple to blow me away.  It's nice, and I'm pleased to own it, but it didn't make me think 'wow'.

I don't think I will buy another BU £5 sovereign piece now.  Exclusively bullion coins from now onwards for me, I think.

I love the matte finish of the BU coins... I prefer it over the proof. I don't own one but if I could afford it I'd have the BU over the proof I think. Congrats on getting a good quality one. It should fo well over time but only time will tell. At least you're happy to own it, that takes away a lot of the stress straight away.
