I'm DogSoldier1973 from the same Youtube channel, I'm a silver and gold stacker and started stacking last year, though i have been interested in coins for a long time and built up quite a good collection for free whilst metal detecting in the UK. Chris invited me to the forum, which i think is a fantastic place to get together with other stackers from around the world and hope it can be the home of the Youtube silver community and any other stackers for that matter! See you all on the forum ;)

Thanks for your support DogSoilder it's greatly appreciated! Where are the best sites for metal detecting silver, or is that top secret? :)

lol yes a closely guarded secret! ;) no...in all honesty, the entire UK is absolutely fantastic for metal detecting! Just doing a little research on old medieval villages and Roman roads and towns will have you well on your way to finding your first piece of buried treasure! The hardest job is then gaining permission from land owners to detect on the fields surrounding these areas ;)

Would be awesome if you stumbled upon an ancient treasure chest of silver. Surely the land owner is allowed to keep it, or do you sign some agreement that the if you find someone you are the entitled to it? Or is the state entitled to anything found. How does the system work?

How it usually works is....you pay the land owner for permission to search his land (Maybe £10 a time) though quite a few will let you search free of charge after they get to know you, and know you are not a threat to them (This sometimes can be the hardest barrier to break down), and that is why you usually start by offering money....as money talks. You make a verbal agreement that if you find anything of significance that the profits will be split 50/50. Once you get permission you show the farmer/land owner all your finds at the end of the day (This makes them happy that you're not hoarding off treasure from their fields), most of this is scrap a worthless pieces of metal.

You can go hours and days and weeks before you find something really nice....and usually if you find single coins the farmer will tell you deserved to find it for all the time and effort you put in. So usually if you find a coin or artefact below £100 in value you usually get to keep it.

I was lucky enough to find quite a lot of Roman silver denarii on one land owners property and i had been going there so long that he didn't even want to keep one of the coins....He was just happy to see them and to learn more about the history of his land.

If you find a treasure hoard....then thats different. A treasure hoard consists of multiple (more than one) gold or silver coins found together or a silver or gold artefact that is older than 300 years old. If this happens and i have done this also, the items must be shown to the land owner and then reported. The finds will generally then go to the British Museum and inspected and categorised and then finally valued by a third party. Then if the British museum or a local museum wishes to purchase the items....they set about raising the funds and the monies are then equally shared out to the finder or finders and the land owner.

Thanks guys ;) They can vary in price quite a lot....Common ones sell for as cheap as £30-£40 and better and more rare ones can sell for thousands. I've actually never had mine valued as i wouldn't dream of selling them after all the mud, sweat and tears that went into finding them! lol

Not even tempted if they are a few grand?

I'd be too intrigued not to have them valued.

I really really like those.

And I can only imagine the stories those coins have and the things they have seen.

Amazing.

It's something special to pick up a coin out of the soil and know that you are the first person to touch and see it for nearly two thousand years!!! Nothing beats it! It's an absolutely fantastic feeling :) I probably will have my finds valued one day....but i doubt i'll ever sell, i'm very attached to them.

I can imagine!!!

I wish I had the time to go detecting, I did a bit on the beach when I was a kid but only ever found empty coke cans and cornetto wrappers!!!

Found anything else cool? Ever found gold?

The big hoard was found not too far from me.

I never ever found any Gold :( Most of my friends have....but i never did once. I've found alsorts of things loads of medieval silver coins as well, Roman bronze coins, Roman brooches, Celtic brooches, different artefacts from Iron age all the way forward. Lots of goodies :) The UK is probably one of the best places in the world to metal detect in. Though it isn't as easy as it sounds and take a lot of time, effort and expense. My metal detector cost over a grand.

Wow, that must be one of those discriminating jobbies.

They even look cool.

I'm too impatient for detecting though, if I didn't find something in 10 minutes I'd throw my toys out and start something else.

I have the attention span of a pre-schooler.
