Selling gold coins on Ebay

Hi all,

I have 2 half sovereigns to sell. Was going to use EBay but worried about unscrupulous buyers. My worry is someone buys them sends back a fake gets refund and keeps my coins.
does this happen or am I too paranoid?

Thats a hard one to give advice on tbh, its ultimately your choice but i have sold gold and silver on their and made over 100 sales this year alone with no issues but you might always hit a dodgy one, you can only lessen the risk by sending special delivery (that they pay for of course) and check their feedback too, and of course if you get ripped off and they send you fakes then you have their name and address to take action for counterfeit goods and get the police involved or send the sheriffs round.. 😊

It has to be what you are comfortable with and what you feel safe with, i'm sure there a quite a few members who sell on ebay too and they may or may not have had issues..

you could always put a line on your listing saying something like

"all precious metals will be sent by special delivery for buyer/seller protection and security as I take precious metal fraud very seriously"

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.

oh and one other thing, don't allow for click and collect as the staff at these stores sometimes wont sign for it and its a mission to get it back...

Thanks Gordy.

these are coins that I have come across amongst a range of other coins in a tin which my mother found after my father passed away last month. There is a fake 1823 double sovereign too.

Would folk on here be able to advise if my half sovereigns are real. They certainly look right. I have done remedial measurements but done't have all the kit to do the specifics as per the buying guide on here.

Can I post a couple of pics? Not sure how people are with this kind of question 🤷🏼‍♂️
thanks

Never had a problem selling on eBay but that's not to say I don't get concerned.
I used to worry about the following scenario -
You have a person who has say a 3 or 4 coin proof set but 1 of the coins is marked.
This person buys your perfect coin to replace the marked one and claims the coin received is marked and sends it back.
In other words there was a swap and you receive back an inferior coin.
EBay 99.9999% of the time will favour the buyer so ALWAYS take good photographs of the coin you sell if that would be of concern.

As for bullion sovereigns etc just a picture that would identify it by its main marks and ideally a weight.
Uploading clear photographs on your listing is highly recommended as this is like a fingerprint of the coin.
If a scammer returned a substitute it would be easily identified as such.
Your seller protection only works if there is PROOF of delivery so take that in to account in selecting method of shipping.

My recommendation is to sell on this forum to a buyer with feedback for peace of mind and as there are no fees to deduct you may end up with a fair net price.

The only time I was let down badly by eBay was I purchased what was listed as a 1 kilo silver Kookaburra.
The listing had used library pictures.
What I received was a tiny replica weighing I guess about 5 grams that would be suitable as a necklace pendant.
The listing photographs showed the reeded edging of the Kook but the small replica was smooth as it wasn't thick enough to be reeded.
Luckily the seller acted "dim" and I was refunded but believe me there were anxious moments.

Good advice above. When selling on eBay I always take plenty of high quality photos for proof of the coin and as Pete mentions also use these on the listing. Also we take a video of the coin and packing process as further evidence. Then use a tracked postal service. That is about the best you can do. When people don’t do this there is risk they are opening themselves up to. Also a poorly Worded and formatted eBay list with poor photos suggests you are not being thorough.

The trouble with eBay is that they ALWAYS side with the buyer.

I knew somebody who once sold a car part on eBay, a few £100's worth. The buyer opened a case after it had been shipped and asked to return it claiming it was faulty. It wasn't.

The buyer returned it and the seller received an empty box. The buyer provided the returns tracking information for the 'return' to eBay. The seller said they hadn't received the item and it was just an empty box.

The buyer got a full refund and kept the item. This sort of thing happens a lot and eBay turn a blind eye to it, they're just interested in their fees and nothing else.

Like in all walks of life , eBay is fine until your cross paths with the nutter.  The best negative feedback i have read is after someone sold a 1/10th Gold coin . The buyer was outraged because the photo was so good he thought the coin was much larger than it actually was ... 😂

They both look like they have the Sydney mint mark.

Why not sell them here on the forum?

I am looking at that. Just got to read about how to again. I haven't been on here for a while.

thanks

I tried to sell some items (not PMs just household bits and pieces) eBay genuinely froze my account because it was 'suspicious' (maybe because I've not used my account for years IDK?) Anyway long story short I now can't log in and non of the help lines go to a human who can help, all automated phone lines such a hassle and not even got to the fun and games of dealing with potential buyers yet

You will get more for your money on eBay especially if you list it with the 0% selling fee offer.

Never seen this offer from fleeBay.
Do you mean 0% listing fee perhaps ?
New fee structure from eBay that includes the former PayPal fee so expect charges around 13% now.
Sometimes there is a weekend special seller's offer but expect to still pay at least 3% from your final selling price.

Sorry my mistake I mean £1 selling fee so if you sell a sovereign for £350 you only pay £1 to eBay.
