Why does it? 🙋‍♂️

It's not a swiss cross.

It is the coat of arms of Savoia

the House of Savoy led the Italian unification in 1860 and ruled the Kingdom of Italy until 1946. Vittorio Emmanuele and Umberto (can't remember the numbers) on that coins were part of this family.

Some further experiments - this time with a sort of redneck light box made from a cardboard box with a diffuser made from a hole cut in the end and covered with a sheet of paper to act as a diffuser.  A LED torch shone through the diffuser provided the light, although I think this really needs a proper diffuse light source.  See below for bonus pics of the redneck light box.

I'm using this 2021 Germania Knights as it's a nice and very shiny coin, which makes it quite hard to photograph.  We've sort of managed the reflections enough to make out the design fairly well, although you still get a fair bit of specular reflection.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

And another evolution of the light box - this time lined with black paper to eliminate most of the reflections from the interior of the box.

And changing the angle of the photo - there's a bit of software zoom in this and it's tickling the edge of the camera's sensitivity so the resolution is not so hot.

Another experiment in Germania, this time with my shiny new 1oz Fenrir and its predecessor Fafnir.  Here I made up a small cardboard ramp to prop the coins up on a slight angle towards the light.

In related news, the Germania lens caps are kinda neat, but I notice if stacked in a tube the base of the cap is resting on the lens itself, even though the base is rebated slightly.  I wonder if that might mark the lens over time.

2021 Knights of the Past

Another take on this coin, this time done with Dr. Dave's Dohickey, which has a pane of glass angled at 45° to shine light directly onto the face of the coin.
