NGC Submission - I am lost

Recommended Posts

I have decided to submit some modern silver proof and a couple of gold proofs for NGC grading. I have joined up and got the forms, but I am pretty confused on how to fill them in, or what needs returning etc?

Can I send coins in for grading in their original Royal Mint capsules, as I can't even make that out?

Any help or if anyone has a similar completed form they could upload I would be very grateful.

And I am submitting from the UK via the London office.

Thanks

Can you get to London? If so NGC will show you how to fill the forms in. Once you've seen this once or twice you'll know how to do it yourself. It seems complicated at first but it's not :)

Yes you can send coins in caps but you have to specify that and pay the $4 (don't know what it is in pounds now - I'm sure it's more!) for them to be returned.

Otherwise transfer them carefully to non-PVC coin flips (protect them well if sending by post ofc).

NGC is much more relaxed than PCGS in my experience. You can send them coins in their plastic snap-caps or flips and they don't give you any issue. You print 3 forms that look the same one NGC copy, Receiving, and Shipping, and a 4th page which allows NGC to open any graded slabs for re-grading if you're sending them slabs. The will register on your submission page when they receive it, and then you just wait for their return. I was scared the first time I mailed out thousands of dollars too but you can insure the package. It's pretty easy.

Royal Mint capsules are fine to send to NGC. You don't want to open them especially if they are proof 24k gold and risk scratches simply to transfer them to a flip. I've sent plastic capsules to NGC many times.

Any caps are fine to send, it's just you have to pay to get them returned. Some of course are harder to replace than others if you don't pay and think you or a buyer might like one in the future.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick follow up on this subject. I sent a package off to NGC UK last week, my first and they received it last Wednesday. Checked on the submission page and nothing is showing. (RMSD says package received)

Any idea from anyone out there what the time frame is before something shows on the system. I know the chances of the package not being delivered and signed for by someone else are slim but you never know and the old paranoia starts to kick in. Would it be anything to do with the fact that NGC only updates on  Tuesday?

I did also send them a email saying a package was on the way with the SD number. Didn't get a reply to that so I'm assuming if there was a problem they would have emailed back saying they didn't receive the package.

As I say any help on the next stages after posting would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

I submitted mine on the 10th March and it didn’t show for about 3 weeks; it then arrived in the US in early April and has been in for grading since the 20th April

its not great but that’s my recent experience of timescales. It was sent under Express as well

That’s perfectly normal. They will have a backlog of packages to open and register.

The status will, at some point, show ‘received’ and then onwards from there.

I believe all coins go to NGC in America for grading right?

Yes. I believe they do on site grading in Munich once or two weeks a year, but not London. Maybe sometime in the future.

I had the same thing, it took about 3 weeks to be updated on the system.

Just checked and my coin is now on the system, so 2 weeks seems to be quite good. I've graded many coins but always through third parties. To me anyway it will be interesting to follow the process and time lines as it happens and get the final grade.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment. 👍👍👍

How much did the the third party charge you?

@Hunter87 Good question. How long is a piece of string? It all depends on the coin and what options you choose. As a minimum I would roughly say about £25 plus and go from there. It all depends on what the coin is and what options you choose (special label, conservation, scratch resistant slab etc). A basic 1 oz silver coin is going to cost far less than a 2 oz gold 3 Graces with conservation. It is a bit of a rabbit warren but once you get your head round it, it's not so bad.

I wanted to grade on my own to understand the process and stages that are involved from end to end. Its not something I will do every time and will still use 3rd parties. It's definitely cheaper going through a 3rd party if you only have one or two coins to grade. I've used Numi and Coins of the Realm and no complaints from either. Both keep you informed if you have any questions and very efficient.

Hope that helps a little, if you've got any more questions then fire away..
