Here's another attempt with the camera at a slight angle of maybe 10-15 degrees off vertical.  This time the lights are being reflected off some white card.  Still, the depth of field of the lens leaves some of the coin out of focus.  'Pro' mode on the camera lets one diddle this a bit, but I'm not sure if it's actually changing the aperture or just simulating that off the CCD.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

So I knocked together a quick coin photo rig with inspiration from https://www.chards.co.uk/blog/coin-photography-kit-taking-photos-the-chards-way/1046

3 sides of black painted mdf, 2 bits of clear acrylic and a lens hood as a baffle. Don't need lights, just position with open side facing a window. Gives good consistent results with various coin finishes, which is what I was after. Works well with hand held phone, stunning detail from Sony A7RIV on tripod though! Excuse the crappy coin!

So....... got my Coin Gizmo from @DrDave and first attempt on a 1/10th Brit as wanted to see how it worked on a small coin with lots of detail...

first coin was with the Gizmo and 2nd without, both took from a Samsung S21

and the cloth was a fine glass cleaning cloth even though it looks like a floor carpet in the pics 😂

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.

I got one of those little octopus tripods to put the camera in when I take photos.  You can also get little bluetooth remote dohickeys that you can pair with the camera.  These let you snap the coins without jiggling the camera.  The tripod I got came with the remote and cost about £15 if I recall correctly, although in practice it's a bit cheap and nasty.

Try to hold the camera completely horizontally above the coin. The lens should be at a right angle to the light source

And any marks on the glass will unfortunately show up because of the light 🥴

I’ve asked @ChrisSilverto create a new Coin Photography Techniques pinned thread within the Photo Section

this is a place to discuss your photography questions and methods, whether you’re a dslr or mobile phone user

we are lucky to have a number of talented and knowledgeable photographers among us 😎

Does your 'suspect' George sov sound the same when pinged or flipped?

Apparently some sovs were produced in gold gilded platinum in the past, some more info in this that I'm reading at the moment in the early pages

Similar sound but hard to tell if exactly the same.  It's the right size and weight, the effigy and stamping looks correct, and the surface texture looks correct - apart from the colour, the anisotropic reflection is still present and looks right.  Apart from the colour, the other major oddity is the grey discolouration around the rim.  I suppose it could also be solder residue or some such, although the coin doesn't look like it's been polished.

When I get a spare moment I'll take it in to somebody in Hatton Garden and get it zapped with an XRF machine to find out.

They seem happy enough to go with the sigma for verification/testing... interesting. :)

Not exactly a photo of my stack but a screen shot of explorer set to 'large icons' on a directory with pics of my sovereigns.

It's so satisfying to see the coins so neatly ordered in the grid with every coin sized the same, but... how about that bottom right corner?!? Need one more!

All in good time.  Don't get paid until the end of the week.

Well, props to @Charliemouse and @DrDave for their help in figuring out how to get decent photos out of a smart phone.
