Your opinion on (modern) Half Sovereign vs 1/10oz coins

Happy Sunday everyone,

I was thinking of perhaps adding some modern half sovereign's to accompany the modern sovereigns I currently have. In the same time, I don't necessarily have that much affinity to sovereign coins, these were mainly purchased for their liquidity and value.

I have looked into some of these half sov's and find their prices not as value-for-money as the full sov's. I know there's about 0.5g difference between a half sov and a 1/10oz, so considering perhaps getting some 1/10oz's instead. Think about 1/10 krugs, brits, perhaps 3g panda.

My question is basically, in your opinion/experience, how liquid are these 1/10oz coins? Also, do you have any and how do you like them as opposed to half sov's?
Any thoughts on pro's / con's between the half sovs and 1/10oz are much welcomed.

If you are talking bullion, sovereigns every time.

Half sovs and 1/10s have a higher premium but that is usually realised on resale.

Half sovs and tenths are ideal for those with a lower budget.

I personally buy both and always find them easy to liquidate at the right price. As Roy said, premiums are usually higher, especially on 1/10s but i've never had any issues recouping when selling.

They also provide flexibility, should you need to raise smaller amounts of cash.

I asked a very similar question before xmas. Got a number of helpful replies, essentially I think though gold is gold. Initial premiums will be recouped when sold. Like you I have no great affinity to sovs, I only have one. My budget wouldn't normally let me spend £300+ a month, and I would sooner buy smaller more often. So I have since bought a 2.5g bar, a 2021 1/10th Brit and a lucky dip half sov. To be fair I like them all for different reasons- the bar is nice in its card, but you can't hold the actual gold. The 1/10th is very pretty, but probably too small to appreciate with the naked eye. The old half sov is surprisingly large compared to the Brit considering as you say it's only an extra 0.5g, but you can hold it and it has a lot of history to it.

In summary, all have their merits I think, and I will likely continue to buy a variety. It's the spice of life!

If the trading action here on the forum is anything to go by (and it is, obviously) you will have no problem selling your gold regardless of the format as long as the price is right.

Not really an answer to your question, I know, but this is where I have ended up after asking myself the same question recently.

I have a collection of half sovereigns and like them.
I did have a number of 1/10 Britannias, mainly proofs and chose to sell them all.
In terms of resales, it makes very little difference.
Premiums have crept up on both coins and I don't know any reason other than it's what the market will bear.
When I started my collection of half sovereigns they were priced more or less at half a full sovereign.
Today I would not pay the premiums so would look for full sovereigns or even 1/4 or 1/2 oz rather than 1/10.

Pandas don't seem to do that well here in the UK not sure why. They are lovely coins with the designs changing every year.

In terms of resale from my limited experience pandas are not that liquid.

I buy both half Sovs and 1/10th Brits and have a few oz's of weight in these two coins. They would both sell pretty quickly if you ever needed to sell later on. Like @Tn21 said pandas dont do so well so I would avoid.

I gave up on 1/10th coins, found the premiums on them were just crazy and was better off just waiting until I had enough for a full sovereign. Got a few 1/2 sovereigns as well which still have a premium but not as bad as the 1/10th.

Can’t fault the detail on the coins thou.

oo do sovereigns not get delivered in capsules?

I’m sure they do if they’re bought in sets or boxes it must of been bought as bullion even though it’s 2020,

if your questioning the legitimacy of it it’s in royal mint packaging and purchased through a trusted member on here with hundreds of sales.

no, it was just a question about packaging, I've seen them in that royal mint blister packaging before. Seemed to be only the sovereigns I've seen delivered like this, everything else is in tubes
