mainly looking to build a small stack as a hedge for the future, so slow and steady and try not to get burnt whilst I learn to walk since it's marathon rather than a sprint - but I've inherited the old man's collector instinct, if not his knowledge and experience, so I'm looking to learn - then I'll sell my worldly belongings and go all in when I get over enthusiastic and arrogant! 🙄

It's not a bad time to get onboard. It was only a short while ago that gold was at an all time high (in many currencies). It's much better to buy now than at an ATH.

It can, it might, it probably will go lower than today but you know it's been higher before and it's quite capable of doing it again, especially considering what's just around the corner.

Watch that collectors instinct as it can be a downfall here. Choose a few collections you like and stick to them. Its tempting to try and complete as many sets of coins as you can when you first start out, but you will only lose money trying to chase those sets to completion. Pick up newer series and collections that are still on the early releases and itll pay dividends.

"Small stack" means different things to different people.
A small stack can be 20 coins or 1,000.

Are you looking at silver bullion, cheapest silver, more collectible and interesting coins, or just a mixture of whatever you can get within your budget ?
Place a wanted on this forum and you will very quickly get offers.
Prices will be likely be significantly less than purchasing from any dealers, or coin shops, so the way to pop your cherry joining the PM addictive club.

I'm limiting my spend whilst I learn more and waiting to receive my first couple of Britannias to get started whilst keeping an eye on the price. I'll be looking to add a few more ounces in the next few weeks, so will be sure to upgrade to premium and look out for good deals before putting up a wanted post.
