If you don't trust the seller then avoid buying.
If you do trust the dealer / seller and you require peace of mind you need to do several things -

1. Obtain the exact specifications of the coin by checking the web and note from a few sites not just the first one.
2. Measure diameter and centre thickness and confirm your measurements are within the tolerance of the specifications
Higher numbers especially thickness are red flag #1
3. Weigh precisely to the nearest 1/100 gram if possible and red flag #2 is underweight by say 3% from spec. even allowing for wear.
4. If your coin appears a little thicker ( ignore the rim ) AND underweight then you should make a specific gravity test.
To do this at home accurately requires an understanding of the errors but done carefully will confirm gold but assumes you know the SG for the carat of your coin.

IF IN DOUBT STAY CLEAR

ATS have always been very helpful when i have dealt with them and have been happy to answer any questions i have had prior to buying. I'm not sure how things are customer service wise at the moment as i should imagine a lot of them aren't in the office so don't have direct access to the coin. But I'm sure they wont mind if you drop them a mail. If you have doubts, i would advise not buying, but i certainly don't think ATS would be out to intentionally mislead anyone.

What an interesting choice! You will obviously not get the best price per gram with this coin, but you will own piece of European history :)

As Pete noted, buying gold coins requires trusting the seller, unless you have your own means of checking what you are getting. And even if the dealer is trustworthy, it may happen that they do not check thoroughly every single coin they buy from the second hand market. So, it is really difficult to have absolute certainty that you own genuine coins, especially if buying such old coins.

As to this particular dealer, I would leave it up to others to share their opinion, I would just like to point out that you may wish to check with the dealer if the coin you are buying is exactly the one pictured, or ask for the pictures of that specific coin. Otherwise you may be surprised that the picture was for illustration only and you got much more worn coin...

Well, you have certainly right to ask about what you are going to get for your money and they have right to ignore you, or politely explain that they unfortunately can't satisfy your request, if they feel so. If nothing else, maybe they at least realise that we as clients do care about condition of coins sold with higher premium and are not happy if we receive a coin in different condition as depicted on their photo...

I’ve dealt with ATS on several occasions- great coins, fabulous service- they often do low premium deals on 1oz Gold coins and don’t mind rummaging around in the safe to let you know what year dates and condition report- and you receive your coins in a little box with a chocolate included.
I recommended ATS to @Abyss who managed to get one or two special design Britannias he was missing.

I concur. ATS has a coin that I had been after for ages and was a silly price elsewhere (BBP) which was the only other place that had one.  Good price and great service.

@Pete ^this. Even if they're an established seller, it takes a lot of trust.  While a bit easier, there have been times when even the specialists have been caught. Perhaps, an email to them, outining your concerns and possibly some option of return?

I think @Nick1368 can give an appraisal of the service you receive if you visit their office 👍

By all accounts,  there's also a very pleasant view to be had when dealing over the counter 😉

lol yeah if you are lucky you will be served by a busty blonde young lady , when you go there make sure you have a look at the coin that you are buying as well 🤣
