Fancy releasing a coin in the actual year which is stamped on it. Always amazes me with magazines also, I am sure you can buy some December editions at the paper shops today.

Yes but although they'll feature the new portrait, it's going to be another boring G&D reverse. The RM seem to have lost all imagination these days and have decided that gold sovs and silver Brits will be just bullion. They are guiding collectors towards the proofs. This is short-sighted in my opinion, there really is no reason to buy new year sovs and Brits at all these days.

Around this time last year I seem to remember reading that the new portrait would be included on the later 2015 sovereigns, meaning there would to two different 2015's.

I take it this is no longer happening or did I invent it anyway?

I purchased a fourth portrait proof sov 2015 and a fifth portrait proof sov 2015 as a bit of fun. There were no non proof fifth heads issued stamped 2015.

I know I probably got reamed on the price at The Mint but hey ho, them's the breaks.....:) I picked up a George's second birthday G and D proof as well. Another reaming but I liked the design. Got a Charlotte birthday sov proof and the Magna Carta (au/ag) proofs respectively, so when people talk about the mugs that buy too soon.....well, you can say you've spoken to one now ! When I pop me clogs, oh how we will all laugh :)...ermmm....well, maybe not me !

Yes they missed a trick. That G&D design would have made a fabulous sovereign reverse!

I got it on a ridiculous punt that they might change the design to this in the future....never happen I know but it is a great looking design in the flesh so to speak and would look superb as you say on the reverse of a sov.

I thought about buying the 2nd birthday coin as I liked the look of the design as well but just couldn't force myself to pay their prices.

It wouldn't be so bad if RM coins even held their price but you can usually pick them up much cheaper after a few years.

Yes, that is very true. The main issue in my case is the exchange rate, so now has always been better than later (especially in the last couple of years with a rise in consumption tax (5% to 8%) AND a drop in the exchange rate Two summers ago 130 yen bought 1GBP. Now 186 yen does (it went as high as 197 this year). So, there is no time like the present in my situation.
