I had to Google what these were such is my ignorance. Are these considered to be an investment, much like being gold bars/coins? Where prices can go up or down?

I don't think you need to see them as a investment in gold or silver especially with the high premium. It's more like a gimmick. I think they are very pretty and nice to have, that's the reason i would buy these or give away to mates. There is always a chance they will rise in value through the years.

At this price they work out at £3500 per troy Oz.  Expensive to make but it is possible to redeem the gold from them and if gold doubles so will the goldback. A pretty way of having tradeable gold in small amounts

It's simply super fractional. 1 GB is 1/1000 oz gold. So just like all fractionals the premium goes up and up as the size goes down. For some people this is too small. If you like the idea of using gold as a daily currency, then these are just right.
