What are these on edge of sovereigns?

I've noticed on some sovereigns, I've added some links as examples, that in the N, SE, SW of the coin along the edge there is some combination of discolouration or rubbing - I'm not sure what it is. Though it always seems to be in these locations. What is this, and what causes it?

These are all PCGS graded coins...are you referring to the case internal holder over top of the coin edge as being the source of discoloration? As I believe that may be what you are seeing.

Thanks - that must be what it is.
