Aussie Kangaroos

I am curious to the high premiums on Australian 1 ounce bullion silver Kangaroos compared to other coins like Kookaburras for example.

I just watched today the close on eBay of a few Roo coins -

A 2008 went for £77 plus P&P item 371350556328

A 2007 went for £66.90 plus P&P item 181773095908

A 2006 went for £38.55 plus P&P item 181773094563

A 2005 went for £37.51 plus P&P item 181773093204

A 2002 went for £37.55 plus P&P item 371350550936

Yet 1993 - 2000 coins sell for just over £20 and even proofs like the 2012 high relief for just above £30.

Yes I too am a little non-plussed about these. I guess it must be to do with mintages but I'm not sure what a standard coin is whether capsuled, carded or whatever.

Would like a sage to enlighten us please :)

The mintages on the bullion coins compared to kooks are far lower for example 2 of the coins you quote 2007 mintage is 8,598 2008 is 6,802 which is very low for a bullion coin, also there is a big German fan base for the carded versions.

Its just the old thing supply & demand.

The problem with common sense is, its not that common.

Yes, I see that and the carded versions are indeed very collectible.

I started picking up a few carded Roos but getting the 2004 - 2013 looks like it will be rather expensive.

Dug deep and bought the 2014 & 15 years from EMK Germany but some years are way OTT for me.

I believe MrWebb is the resident experts on the roos. He helped me out when I was very lucky to pick up a 2008 for 25 quid down my local jewellery shop.

Particularly when you think that the Koala for 2012 had a little over 2000 placed in blister packs yet they don't come anywhere near to the price for a comparable roo.

Still cannot work out if the mintage figures for 2007 are correct. All of these were reported to have been sent to 2 x  dealers to distribute; both of whom designed their own blister packs. 4598 were sent to  Downies for the Oz market, and 4000 to Global Promotions in the USA and for distribution to the rest of the world. Both alleged that all the coins were set in blister packs............ so where is the surplus as per the uncarded?

Even taking into account the potential for some people to remove the coins from the blister, it still does not answer how there are so many in circulation in comparison to the blister. The Ebay auction listed earlier (181773095908) looks suspiciously like it came from a Westminster Coin set of some description; so how did they get them?

Either the total figure was understated or even less coins were set in cards. If either of the distributors cocked this up I think the smart money would go on Global Promotions . If this is the case, then I would say that the 2007 blister pack below is the one you should keep an eye open for as it may be that 4000 is an overstatement

My understanding on mintage figures is:

 2007 BU - 8598

 2008 BU - 6802

All the rest from 2000 onwards are between 20,000 and 55,000.

I'm not sure why they carry  so much of a premium, except for the low mintage coins.

I believe also that the 2007 wasn't issued in any official packaging(so too the 1998 proof), so ANY that come

carded are after market,if you look on ebay you will always find at least one variant of the card. :)

Is this 2015 Roo at sunset a rerelease design or slightly different?

How often has this design come out? Is it every year? I thought it was a one off at some point but I see there is a 2014 too.

Its looks like a good deal at about £30 especially at the FX rate of 1.41 - but maybe not if its knocked out every year.

They are completely different HH they are 1/5th of an ounce and started in 2010 & only come in proof versions.

I googled German E-bay and put in Silber 1oz Kangaroo, There are shed loads on there for sale.

Correct and at high prices as well !!

I also monitor Australia but many sellers are asking a small fortune to ship their coins and then there is the dreaded UK VAT-Mafia waiting to take their cut.

Although not as active as he was, Dale from Strenue has procured some request items for me.

This month he got hold of a 'Coin Fair' flashed Kangaroo  $1 BU blister from 1993 and for around £30. As these were limited to 2500 units for three years they are fairly rare; so in comparison to the German prices a good deal and even below the price for the generic blisters for that year

Similarly you will have no problems with postage costs and customs.  If you PM him he will give the overview of what he does to negate cost

@Pete,there are a good few sellers on ebay in Aus that charge good postage rates, edlins is one

of them ive bought from a lot and ive never incurred import charges.

@ArthGoch, the 1993 coin fair mintage was 5000,the 94 and 95 were 2500 each.

All my Roo series so far(with the exception of a couple)have come from Australia,i personally

wouldn't bother buying from the German sites,as you can get all of the series so far on ebay and if your canny

or put some cheeky bids in you can and will get a bargain.

Thanks guys for the replies - I am on the lookout for silver Roos from 2002 carded and non carded.

I am checking eBay across Europe and also in Australia and I see many listed BUT prices are way too high and that is the subject thread - why is this series demanding such high premiums ? Having said that it is interesting checking the prices on APMEX for early Somalian Elephants, some are seriously expensive for bullion coins.
