Recession / depression resistant business idea??

Recommended Posts

Having tutoring side hustle seems like a very cushty deal for me, but by its nature you need to be high skilled to be able to do it.

I think if you can offer tutoring in music, language, or academics then that is a very nice position to be in

**

However, you need to caveat that with the truism that people usually get involved in something out of self enjoyment, and once you turn it into a job then quite usually lose a lot of what made it appealing in the first place. Being a surf instructor may sound like a dream job to many people, but once you've been doing it for a while it just becomes the job

Sorry but that is just not true re a surf life or anything related to the the ocean. From personal experience of living and surfing/instructing by the ocean, I can categorically say you are wrong. You wont get rich (unless you innovate)  but by god you have an enriching life. If money is your sole goal, you dont belong anywhere near the ocean. Any  ocean family will tell you that.

Commit and any life out of an office life is far farbetter and more healthy in the natural world than some schmuck chasing computer data, numbers and brownie points with the odd vacation to appease their egoism about how much money they have.

Is it easy ? No. Will there be ups and down ? Yes. Will you have to suffer to get what you want ? Yes. Seems lime a normal life to me.

Never tell anyone to not pursue their goals. Encourage them and let them find their own way....they might fail...they might succeed or fail or fall somewhere inbetween.....

In terms of reality, the winter is the very hardest to keep it all going. Only hard core locals and out of towners who are also hardcore surf through the winter (when the waves are actually way way better) and they dont spend money regardless. Itis the partimers and wannabees who want to have a go etc that pay the actual bills. Treat them with respect like any business and you will thrive. Will they come back just to surf again ? 99% no.

.You have to make sure you can get through the cold months, be it serving food to locals or have a wife/gf who has a real job and loves you or vice versa.....

I am very happy to advise anyone interested in thinking of setting up, warts and all. Anyone who needs credentials from me, please take a look at Sweetness and Blood, a surf book written by a friend and ex guest of mine, Michael Scott Moore. He stayed with me, I introduced him to some undervround surf folks of consequence and thebugger actually put a few what I thought were bbq and beer chats into his flippin book !

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7881501-sweetness-and-blood

The reason he called it Sweetness and Blood is that, on a reef break,if you make it, it is the sweetest feeling of being at one with the raw beauty of the ocean. If you muck it up...you hit the reef...blood !...Never a truer emotion about going for life...be bold, be respectful of nature....it is a life.

If I had to sum life up, no matter what you choose to do, it is “desire.” Never let anyone sell you short.....

@vand Massive respect for you mate and every post you make here.

I've been shooting on and off for a few years, I've sold one print for a about a tenner!

Some of my better stuff.  https://www.viewbug.com/member/Stormrider

It would be interesting to know what you think of it.

Wow! Plenty of decent shots. You've certainly got talent. Living by the coast and taking long exposure shots is a must. I took a few in Ilfracombe a few years back, getting up early from my hotel room when I went down for a weekend. Got soaked but it was worth it.

I haven't heard of viewbug before, I just post mine on Flickr, which are mainly documentary shots but with a few like yours. Do you post yours on any other sites?

They are really good.

I had a look at stock stuff today and its really badly paid isn't it considering that you are technically helping brands and businesses make a lot more money.
Did some testers of next doors cat, at the end of the day as long as its tagged properly & stuff its a good way to get better if nothing else. I like the idea of insect macro as thats something I could do with the kids. Apparently people take photos of really strange stuff and find that it sells well (like a load of straws in starbucks).

Im guessing that pets must be so over done!!!

I am gonna dip my toe in the flippable art on another post I think, i am very good at buying and selling so why not as thats potentially more of an investment than buying a load of metal and sitting on it.

Ilfracombe is about 10 miles from me, I dont go there much, not much in the way of beaches. I used to use Flickr until a few years ago when changed the set up. Now I use 500px and Youpic. Viewbug is mostly for contests, had a few finalists and runners up but never won anything. I used to have a paid account but soon realised that 90% of the prizes go to 10% of the photographers, so I stopped funding other peoples prizes! For the most part I shoot for my own enjoyment.

A few years ago I submitted images to Getty and a few others and I couldn't even get past the acceptance requirements! Maybe they have changed the standards? Time was you could make a nice income through stock photography but I think those times are gone, these days everyone is a photographer what with phones and such. Even the top, professional photographers have turned to doing workshops and the like to make ends meet. Yeah, the pet thing is over done. Macro is good but you need a lot of patience when dealing with bugs!

Nice cat by the way!

I have gone off this idea, the money is laughable for the skill level, I refuse to fund it with my talents. All the people i have seen online make peanuts from it. I could make a lot more money actually taking photos for people or contracting my work to people online.

Gonna concentrate on making video courses for things Im good at (as is a passive income that last decades) & it ticks my boxes & I can work around the world at home. Will people like them? I dont know, all i can do is get one done a month and see. I dont really fancy Udemy, as its a similar type of thing to the stock, but if I eventually have 20 courses all selling only 2 a week thats £400 a week for doing nothing (other than the initial work & some updates maybe). Lets assume that works for 10 years - thats £192,000. If I can do smaller courses on Udemy (or similar) & entice people to my site for direct online coaching or larger more detailed courses for a lot more money, then that has the potential for very large profits. Feels right anyway.  If I crack on with it now I should be in a good position if anything happens Brexit or next flu season or a serious downturn in a few years time.

The food supply business is a little too labour intensive & you have to buy stock, potentially employ people & market it adding risk, but its somehting i would consider if Lockdown mk 2 happens & its a lot worse. Online is where its at, I would rather buy a few KG of fillet steak with a silver coin & walk out the shop past all the people with wheelbarrows full of cash LOL. Sit in my house drinking expensive wine & lighting cigars with £50 notes (only kidding). ;)

Following on from this I have decided to start doing voice over at home.
Just trying to work out how to stop the kids noise bleeding into it, but I have all the kit for it.

I choose this as its a skill i have already & it is unique in a lot of ways.
More importantly I can sell my services worldwide on Fiverr to start with.
And I think I would enjoy it, which is the main thing. its more of a job than some of the c**p on Fiverr (ie holding up a sign).

Seems like a safe income stream in the even of Lockdown no2 & global banking crashes and stuff as i dont have to leave the house.
Might also do bespoke photography of household items or something?? And possibly graphic design??

Technically, alcohol is a solution..

'It [socialism] poses a growing threat, however unintentional, to the freedom of this country, for there is no freedom where the State totally controls the economy. Personal freedom and economic freedom are indivisible. You can’t have one without the other. You can’t lose one without losing the other.'
