what type of silver should I buy to start my portfolio

Could always start with the mains: looks, maples, koalas, brits, etc. 

Also anything but the perth mint tends to be awesome if you got the money

If your looking just for weight, the cheapest. Also a good mix of different stuff, as above, Brits, Maples, Kooks, or go for the so called 'junk' pre 1947 at 50%

First tip stay away from the dealers and buy from the forum. Cheaper and safer usually. It all depends on your budget.

I love everything from the Perth mint quality control is excellent.

Decide whether you are a collector or stacker or a bit of both. Stacker just wants weight at cheapest price possible. Collector likes beautiful coins/bars & will pay extra for them.

 

Although some on here want collector coins for bullion prices lol.

When I started I did a mix of more premium and cheaper silver, if I could go back in time and start again I would just get the cheapest bullion I could get, since you are in the UK it would all be UK stuff as well for the capital gains tax exemption, I have Perth Mint stuff, Somalian Elephants etc. and I went for a bit of variety but in hindsight I wish now I had just stuck with anything from the Royal Mint with Betty Battenbergs head on it and at the best price I could get.

I would buy gold full and half sovereigns and the cheapest 1oz silver coins or 1kg silver bars

Best to start with UK capital gains tax free silver - Britannias, Queens Beasts etc.

I actually meant anything produced from the Royal Mint, Britannias, Queens Beasts etc, I shoud have been more clear as you are right buying direct from the Royal Mint is not the way to do it as they are overly expensive.

With the crazy premiums on gov bullion right now, I would just stack 10oz bars and generics.  When/if the premium drops, then Brits, Phils, ASEs, Maples.

I prefer government backed silver and realize that I get hit with extra premium, but to each his own.  My preference is for Maples since the milk spot reputation seems to reduce the premiums a bit......
