It says

"A gold nugget worth a staggering £10,000" but "20-carat, which weighs around 18 grams"

Maybe a dumb question but why is 18 grams of 20 carat gold worth £10,000?

Unless it represents some sort of rare example value then the paper has likely just added a zero on for entertainment.  Either that or the journalist has fat-fingered it.

'Golden nuggets of this size are extremely rare in Scotland - a country which does not have a commercial gold mining industry.

It is understood that any Scottish gold extracted or panned therefore commands a premium price.'

I can understand it might be worth a bit over spot, but 18g for £10,000? are certain gold nuggets really so collectible?

Just reminds me of the time someone made a dress out of plastic ans sold it on Ebay for £100,000 or something and the papers were reporting how incredible it was.

Then dun dun dun.... of course the buyer never paid and it was joke bids.

Looks like the filling that fell out of my mother's tooth about 30 years ago so not at all worth what the Mail suggests.

Even if it came from outer space inside a meteorite, it cannot possibly be worth more than about £500 can it ?

:D
