Gold quartz nugget

My mother in law gave me the nugget below when I married my wife as I think she felt I had done badly in the deal therefor she wanted to add value ;)

Anyway, I know that it is from a South African mine, however does anyone know how to value it as I am very ignorant on the raw stuff (although it is beautiful)? I don't want to stick it up for auction if it is not worth much as I may as well keep it as a memento …. however if there is ££££ in it then ….

It is around 34 grams.

Thanks in advance for your help and knowledge.

I would take it to a gold specialist who can evaluate it and maybe get it melted into its pure form. There are people on here who do smelting but not sure they do gold @BackyardBullion is an experienced smelter and maybe able to give you a steer and the work he produces on here is sterling! Hope this helps.

Hi - From what I have seen there are people who collect nuggets in their raw form.  Certainly in Australia when I have been to the Perth Mint and other PM vendors they have commanded a premium over spot.

My guess is that it worth more in this form than melted.

Lovely specimen!

I suspect there are many people on this forum who may be able to tell you how to calculate the amount of gold in the specimen - beyond my experience though.

Thank you @dicker both posts are very useful. Have you ever seen one sold on the forum? Very jealous that you have been to Perth Mint. However I bet they don't have a giant Shaun the sheep with his head through a coin like they do at the entrance of Royal Mint experience in Llantrisant.

I wonder how much actual gold weight is in it...

Something like that you cherish for life.

Unless you smash it up with a hammer and separate the gold from the quartz by panning it.

Hi @onlyroadtoheaven

I don't recall one being for sale on the forum before, but I do not check all the time.  I have had a quick search and could not find one in the for sale section.

I visited this place in Kalgoorlie which was interesting to say the least!  https://naturalgoldnuggets.com.au

The Perth Mint has similar for sale in their showroom from minute to pretty large....

Appreciate yours is a bit different but none the less would be interesting to someone in its raw state.

All the best
