So what's the difference between oxidation and tarnishing?

From the internet

"Tarnish is a thin layer of corrosion that forms over copper, brass, silver, aluminum, and other similar metals as their outermost layer undergoes a chemical reaction.Oxidation is defined as the interaction between oxygen molecules and all the different substances they may contact, from metal to living tissue. However, Tarnish does not always result from the sole effects of oxygen in the air. For example, silver needs hydrogen sulfide to tarnish; it does not tarnish with only oxygen."

I don't know if tarnishing or not, but I have the same sort of marks in the same area of my Dragon privy lunars bought last week too. Purchased from Germany. Anybody any ideas please?

Thanks HH, it could be surface rust I suppose but i didn't think containation was too much of a problem from Perth Mint?

Also I tought that perth mint coins don't suffer of these problems..

they didn't develop milk spots before as well, until

some one found one with milk spots. it may be

down to their quality control (shrugs). it could also be that

you both bought it from the same person who may

have contaminated both before packaging them.

Might not be relevant but last year I bought some brand new Perth Mint Koalas in capsules from a well known German supplier.

One of the coins had substantial greasy finger marks on it despite being inside its capsule.

A combination of frankfurter, mustard and pickle I reckon.

Who knows what that would have done had I not washed the coin but its condition is no longer pristine.

I have seen quiet a few examples, like the one below, of edge toning on lunars (the one below is a series 1 2oz coin)

The owners always say that the coin has never been out of the orignal capsule and that the capsule is not damaged!

I think I'm correct in saying that because of the purple colour this is toning and the white bloom on the OP coin is oxidation.

You are correct MCJ the purple/brownish colour is toning, not ideal but not a huge problem for a Bu coin, that strange foggish bloom would concern me more.

The problem with common sense is, its not that common.

From the photo, the coin looks genuine to me.
