A high-grade old head half sov of 1893. This is one of five in the grade assessed by PCGS. with just two graded finer.

This eBay purchase was a pleasant surprise when it arrived, it's much better than the poor quality sales photo suggested. The full word "Britanniarum" on the reverse is overstruck too.

A humble 1906 Sydney half sovereign in PCGS MS63. Mintage of just 308,000 pieces.

An 1857 Sydney Mint half sovereign in PCGS MS62. All Sydney Mint wreath half sovereigns are rare in Mint State. While the 1857 is one of the more common ones, there are just two pieces graded finer than this one, and two others in this grade.

1874 half sovereign found in Scotland with metal detector on farm. Small dent on bottom edge and scratch on back but still extremely happy.

That is a little beauty. A great find. I am in Dundee but know there are a lot of metal detector fans (there must be a name for these people and a collective name - a hoard of metal detectorists perhaps).

A 1900 half sovereign from Sydney graded PCGS MS62. Unlike the London issue, which is abundant in Mint State, the Sydney issue is scarce, with just two in this grade and two finer.

1871 Victoria Young Head Half Sovereign

I like this coin, despite the scratches on the obverse, possibly detector find spade marks.

I had to look closely at the reverse to see the die number correctly. It is 65, although it could be a possible 65/63, but perhaps that's wishful thinking.

Oh, and there is evidence on the reverse of a previous die clash, which I always find more interesting than seeing a "plain vanilla" coin.

1859 Half Sovereign - 1859 / 1839?

What's going on under the 5 of the date?

Could it be an overdate?

I did give it a session in an ultrasonic cleaning tank before we took the photos, but it possibly need another go.

Very interesting. The 8 also looks a bit podgy! Lovely coin. If it’s for sale, I may be interested! Just waiting for a ‘85/3 half to return from PCGS. Loving these Victoria. curiosities!

I agree. The 8 looks like it's concealing another 3 underneath it, perhaps it was the die-sinkers lucky number?

Which makes the "1" look like a tree trunk!

I love it even more now. Tatty is fine by me. History. Love it.

Like some sovereigns, the 1864 Sydney Mint half sovereign can have a Roman "1" or Hindu-Arabic "1" in the date. The coin photographed has the Hindu-Arabic "1".
