The Schizophrenia of Silver

Stacker2020

I only started stacking in September of last year, and I'm very happy to have started when I did. Of course like most I would have preferred it even more if I'd started 20 years ago. By now I'd be sitting atop a mountain of precious metals like Smaug, one eye open while I sleep.

Alas, for now my meagre assortment of boxes containing bullion, collectables and coin silver will have to do, and I will guard them no less fiercely then I would my mountain!

However, nine months into stacking, I find the allure of silver tarnished and milk spotted, much like my Germania Oak Leaf round. I have amassed a fine assortment and decent weight, but have now grown tired of the constant hunt for the next big series or special release.

Don't get me wrong, I can see the logic of silver and still plan to accumulate more, to attain my mountain, but now with more focus and a clearer goal in mind.

The modern semi numismatics are too prone to condition issues to survive my lifestyle. I'll have an old coin with a story and a history, that's already been through the rough and tough days and is now looking to settle down. Those I'll collect and find a home for.

I'll still accumulate bullion, but I'll be boring about it. Sticking to Maples and Philharmonics for their resale demand. If I see a deal on something else I'm sure I'll still take it, but lacklustre and half hearted, already concerned about selling it on and getting more of my boring bullion.

Who knows, maybe I will have another change of heart a few months from now, beguiled by a beauty stamped upon a silvery field. At which point my desire to ferret out, collect and acquire is rekindled and the journey begins anew.

Or, I might just be a bit drunk and melancholy, and tonight, when I get up in the small hours to wrestle space on the bed from my 3 dogs, I'll pick up my phone and scroll through countless pages of silver, looking for the next series to start.

(Take it all with a pinch of salt 😉)

Another thing I think too many overlook when paying well over the odds for semi numismatics is trends. What is popular today is rarely popular down the road especially after they've been tarnished or spotted. I've bought so many special releases from 20, 30, 40, etc years ago for spot value its kind of silly. I think the value in those coins is short term flipping on the ones that do well - long term you're just going to lose.

Also I agree with @JunkBond
