Hi

I am a newbe to buying silver.

i would like to know what  NGC MS 70 ER and PCGS MS 70 FS means

and which is better

ER = Early Release and FS = First Strike.

Both mean absolutely nothing because there is no way they can guarantee that the coins were the first ones off the press.  They are however coins graded within the first 30 days of release.

The two companies use different terms for the same things and neither is better than the other.

If you are buying pandas a most of American collectors and lot of European collectors prefer NGC grading

The grading service gives some people comfort when buying coins that the coins are not fake of in bad condition. beyond that it is just an opinion.

Read through this site about grading and how to spot fakes.

It's easy to spot fake pandas even in fake NGC holders. I found a few of them on eBay the other day .. Just looked again today to grab a picture and they have been taken away.

PCGS coins sell for a higher premium than the equivalent NGC grade; NGC is seen to grade a tad more leniently than PCGS and this is reflected in price.

I've heard people say this but in my experience, I've seen no tangible difference between the two, but I haven't done a proper study.

I've seen definite mis-grades by both companies, both ways.

However, I'm looking primarily at sovereigns and I think both companies struggle with UK coins at times.

I only use NGC for grading as I prefer the slabs. PCGS have just introduced a super slab so they may do well.

My experience sending to NGC is that they have no tendency to over grade and I believe everything I have sent them is either fairly graded or under graded. Several times they have in fact given me two or three grades lower than I thought the coin was worth.

I do monitor though in an unscientific way the prices of coins in NGC versus PCGS slabs and I see no evidence that PCGS command a higher premium.

If this does occur in any way it is at the very very top end of USA coins worth many many thousands of dollars.

I always thought that I saw PCGS coins selling for more than NGC coins as well. At least when looking at MS or proof 70 US coins.

Haven't the slabs of both companies changed over time anyway so they don't always stack together properly?
