I asked Atkinsons if they had any 2015 half sovereigns, and Paul very kindly replied that non where available at his time and last year they all where sold in India. Please excuse my ignorance are these minted in India, why do they get the monopoly on these.

The reason i wanted one was i sold all my scrap metal and wanted a half sovereign with 2015 to represent the year.i sold it in.anal i know but hey works for me.

Not seen any bullion halves yet, you can get proofs for about £165

I would sugget waiting, they'll turn up eventually if only on the secondary market.

In most part of India sovereign is their main form of gold what people buy. In south India most jewellery are made out of souvering. 99 % jewellery are made out 22 carat gold. Probably that's why they sell it in bulk

Interesting. I didn't know that India consumed so many. I wonder if he meant that they get them direct from the mint or whether they acquire them from dealers.

It would seem strange if the mint sold them direct and didn't keep most for the home market.

No they don't buy it from mint. They buy from dealer. I have few from my family who have more than 100 sov. If you go in any Indian jewellery and ask them what they use they will tell you out of sovereign. Even jewellery are measured in sov weight.

For example you see a chain which weight 16g. If you ask them how much gold they would answer you 2 gold. For us we know straight away he means 2 sov. Most of Indian people don't trust fiat money that's why they buy gold

Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) is just another way of saying Bullion but straight from mint quality.

They tart them up by putting them in a case or card but bullion nonetheless. £170 for a half bullion is, shall we say, a tad on the high side!

I don't know how many bullion halves they made last year but they are doing the same this year, not selling them in loose uncirculated form.

I don't think there is much of a demand for modern halves so the mint is trying to restrict supply. This is why I don't buy the comment by Atkinsons about last year's supply all going to India. Why would they buy halves at £170 to melt down when they could get bullion fulls for a few quid more?

Chards will sell you a proof for £165

Interesting video, maybe they are improving things these days.

I've never noticed any obvious difference between the bullion and BU but I must confess I haven't had one of each in my hands to compare, certainly not the recent years.

A few years ago, the BU ones in cards looked just the same as the bullion coins to me.

I'd go for the proof!

£115 if available for the 2015 at Chards for £50 more you get that proof.I have been watching the pick and mix half sovereigns all week from Atkinson's hoping they would go down in price but have crept up over the week to just over £105.I would have to pay another tenner for that 2015, and at the end of the day its bullion isn't it and £10 in cost averaging is £10.

Edit: What i say and what i do are two different things,i just bought a lucky dip half sovereign form Atkinsons for £105.55, this i have bought with the money i got for my scrap metal, feels good to convert all that rubbish into Gold and have an asset for my portfolio from it.  :)

Did anyone see any 2014 bullion halves last year? I don't remember seeing any, RM didn't distribute them via the dealers such as Chards. No sign of any bullion halves yet this year. Perhaps with gold spot so low these days, they don't see the need for fractional bullion less than a full sovereign.

I think it must be a half sovereign related situation. If I remember correctly the quarter sovereign version does have a BU version but no bullion version which kind of makes sense in my mind!

Very interesting, I didn't know that!

I always though it was illegal to destroy currency, although maybe I saw that in a film or something.

This is interesting...I see 2015 bullion half sovereigns are very scarce and sought after, expensive. At bullionbypost they are asking over £300 for one... perhaps worth getting?

I'd sell you a full 2015 sovereign for the same price 👍
