Looking at them, NGC's idea of XF, extra fine, is below the standard of what I personally would want

HGM were selling shield sovs in that condition and much better for £227 ish, they've slabbing them and selling for £270

Id say the best deal on sovereigns on Atkinsons were those 2002 sovereigns which are out of stock now.

Hi guys

I've just noticed that atkinsons have started distributing NGC graded sovereigns. The question is are these coins worth spending my billion budget on? Or should I just stick to normal sovereigns?.

If I had billion to spend I wouldn't bother with sovereigns at all. :)

The problem with common sense is, its not that common.

Yes, most of the slabbed ones are a bit on the dear side and I also agree they don't look my idea of grading as well.

i'm just a bit peeved that I bought a 2002 half and full only to have Royal Mail misplace my parcel.  Since there are no more in stock I won't get a replacement I guess.

As for the angels if you can get a decent deal on one I'd go for it.  I just paid a bit more than I like at over £180 with delivery from Bairds.  I did phone and ask what kind of condition they were in but as they are sold as bullion they weren't giving any real details.  Ive had lower condition francs from Baird's before which is why I asked.

I'm thinking 180 for the angel coins is about ok I looked on tax free gold and they're coming up at 165 + 9 quid postage.

I think you'll probably find they are showing old prices on Chard's site and when you ask they may well be charging more like £200.  If the page doesn't allow you to buy online the prices will usually be well out of date.  I've asked them for prices before and found them to be much higher than the usual competition.

I got bored asking them for prices and not buying anything.  The odd good price does show up but it is usually well advertised on their site.  The pages brag about their prices compared to Royal Mint as well but by the time you pay the £9 delivery you're often better going with the Mint unless you are buying a number of items at once.

Hi Murph

Sorry to hear about your lost coins.

I know I'm new here so you guys might be suspicious of me but I've plenty of spare 2002 sovs, also halves if you're interested. I could do with letting some of my sovereigns go, my wife reckons I have far too many! :D

NGC are OK, almost as reliable as PCGS (USA) or CGS (UK). Slabbed coins are really taking off now as most collectors have no idea how to grade and need the reassurance of a "professional" independent grading when dealing with expensive numismatics. This is understandable as nearly all the coins you see on ebay are overgraded and even coin dealers will do this to some degree. I notice someone here saying they're not impressed by Chards prices but they do make sure you're happy with their grading, tending to undergrade their coins rather than the other way round.

I find Chards OK. They're just down the road from me so I tend to pop in and collect. They used to undercut the mint substantially but I think they've got wise to this now and probably have upped their wholesale prices. With regard to numismatics esp sovs, they are "proper" coin dealers and consequently charge full catalogue prices.

Just had a quick look at what they're offering. Only a couple worth buying at their prices. Most are ex-jewellery or imperfect which aren't elligible for a proper grade, just being returned as "XF features" etc. Their prices are all over the place too; it certainly shows that they don't what they're doing around collectable sovereigns. They should stick to bullion.
