Help regarding molybdenum please

Real anorak question, but does anybody know how a rare earth magnet reacts to a slide test on a silver plated molybdenum one ounce coin please?

Molybdenum is paramagnetic - weakly attracted to a magnetic field. Can't say anything about moly but magnesium is also paramagnetic.  Just tried this - if you take a six in strip of magnesium ribbon, bend it into a U curve and balance it in the middle you can just detect an attraction to a rare earth magnet when it comes within about 2 mm of the end, i.e. hardly any magnetic attraction at all and certainly not something you could easily detect if the magnesium was in a coin form.

(The many articles on the web that say that magnesium is not magnetic are definitely wrong.)

Thanks redrug, I need to stop reading articles like this

and this

It's old news now but I had another look due to a couple of eagles I picked up which I'm not sure about, my understanding is that molybdenum is used in the better fakes as it more closely matches  the density of silver as per the article, but I don't know if silver plated molybdenum would also produce the slow slide of a neodymium magnet associated with .999 silver.

Also liked the graphic of "little man behind the curtain" manipulating the market in Bix Weir's article.

A worry when you buy gold or silver. The Germans re-cast all the gold they received from the US last year - I wonder why?

If you really want to worry yourself, go onto Alibaba Express and search for silver eagle (or any other coin), the result will make you think twice about ebay

Why just Ebay? Fakes have been received even from some of the largest online vendors (not by me personally).

At least with Ebay, you are guaranteed your money back.

Manner of speech rather than singling them out and I agree, Ebay/Paypal does offer protection if you can identify the coins/bars as fakes. Unfortunately, that's getting to be a big if, particularly with gold.

Thats a very good point, you need to prove they are fake before you can try for a refund!!!
