I've only been collecting silver since Oct 2014 so there's still plenty I don't know!

So far, I've used Atkinsons, Darlingtons & Sarnia for single coins, and STG for larger orders but have never bought direct from a Mint or from Apmex etc - is that something that any of you guys/gals do?

If so, what are the pro's & cons?

I've also got to plug a contact I found on here. Morezone is a great guy (retrocave on ebay), good range of coins and a gent to deal with!

The problem with purchasing silver outside of the EU is the shipping & handling costs, often a minimum order, bank transfer costs and VAT.

These soon mount up and when you compare to the full price from the likes of Atkinsons there sometimes isn't any benefit.

If you are looking for specific coins then shop around on the many dealer sites in Germany first, then the USA and Australia.

Sometimes the odd coin will slip through the net of customs and you will not be charged the VAT and processing fees.

This is more likely from fellow stackers Down Under who are prepared to declare the coin as low value or a medallion etc.

Headline prices from the likes of Apmex can be very attractive BUT as a UK buyer you are subject to all their restrictions on how to pay and a huge minimum order. Also they ship FedEx and you will be charged full VAT plus handling fees. Buying single coins or small quantities can be costly due to freight costs and if you choose cheap postal methods from the USA you will not have adequate compensation in the event of loss.

If you can order say 20 ounces or more then your first place to check is STG then CoinInvest and Aurinum in Germany.

Compare with Atkinsons and after adding shipping from the others work out your net landed cost.

You might consider asking members of this forum if anyone would sell to you - there are regular transactions, some at very good prices.

Certainly safer than eBay but for many coins eBay is still a good place to look.

Hope this helps and enjoy your stacking.

Have used apmex but only for modern graded gold coins need to spend a couple of grand to make it worthwhile once tried to order from us mint never again took money from my card but did not process order but it took a couple of weeks for money to be credited back to my account

Have used Apmex several times and not really had a problem with Fedex and Vat. Order needs to be a couple of thousand to make Fedex charge of 50 worthwhile.

Have used them for Gold rather than Silver.

There is no VAT on gold coming into the UK

The problem with common sense is, its not that common.

In principal no vat on most gold coins however it depends on which tariff codes the exporter uses.

I have been charged a special vat rate of 25% of the regular Vat on my first gold coin order from Apmex.

There are ways of challenging the import VAT however when I try to do this it proved to be very cumbersome and possibly not worth the effort unless the sums involved are large.
