Somebody I know who knows I'm into PM's rang me today and said they had a few (if I remember correctly), 2004 silver £5 coins. I've had a quick look on the site and can't find much info. Il be going to look at them tomorrow but I'd like to educate myself beforehand. Are these 1 ounce coins? What do they normally go for? Any help is appreciated chaps!

They will usually be .925 silver and weigh 28.28 grams.

There are quite a few different designs also.

Thanks for that ^^^^

So are they not one troy ounce?

Also what type of money do they bring?

Be very careful. The 2004 £5 coins come in both silver and cupro nickel. Take a magnet to make sure they are silver, because they both are identical in weight.

I would never pay more than £15-£16 for any silver coin of this size. You can regularly pick them up on ebay for these prices or less. I've paid as low as £12 for one of these

Wow- this is exactly why I love this forum. Great advice. Any idea on value for both the silver versions and also the cupro nickel?

Cupro nickel coins are worth feck all. Wouldn't give you a penny over the £5 face value. In fact i probably wouldn't give you 50p for them

Cheers! He's asking about £14 so it doesn't seem like a bargain but also not extremely dear.

£14 is a fair price, but for that I would expect them to be in their original box and with their certificate. If they are not in their boxes then I would have my doubts if they are actually silver.

You could always make an offer on them.

But as HT stated take a magnet to ensure they are silver.

Some silver proof and piedfort crowns sell for a lot more. just look at the london olympics ones, especially the piedforts. granted you can occasionally get a deal on ebay but a lot of sellers don't know what they have or are taking the mick by trying to sell standard coins as proofs or the like.

You'll be lucky to find a silver entente cordiale crown on ebay for less than £30 including postage.
