Just after some advice/opinions

Hi there,

I've been reading this forum for a few weeks now and have decided it's time to join in!

Im a young and some what naive stacker from the midlands.

I have about 17 ounces in my stack so far from early on this year. I haven't brought any silver for months but now I think it's time I got stuck in to it.

My plan is to stack as both an investment and a 'savings account', at the minute I waste so much money its unreal. My question to you guys is what would you buy right now in my situation.

I have about £600 to play with right now.

My plan is to buy some RM Lunar Horses, as I personally after some research and watching how they performed think they will hold there value even if the silver price keeps sinking but also I see some potential to flip them in maybe 5 years time or so as the series continues and hopefully grows in popularity - I believe they under achieved the mints expectations looking at the Lunar Sheep minting figures for this year, which only means in the future there will be more demand.

Now I'm looking at buying three tubes for just over £800, I know its more than I can really afford right now, but as I see it they will soon be very hard to find, let alone at that price.

I could go for two tubes, making it comfortable at around £550.

My plan is too buy a few tubes of the series each year, hopefully being able to make some full sets in 12 years + and sell for profit while also securing my savings in the meantime.

Anyway just some general opinions,

Do you think the coins will perform well in the future?

Would you choose a different coin?

Would you over spend your budget to grab these coins while you can? Or play it safe and just buy what you can comfortably afford. (Keep in mind I have no real responsibilities, no house etc, so it's not a huge risk, just more money that I wanted to spend)

Again I may be very naive but ....

Thanks for any replies guys!

Just a small adivice, don't assume that a full set can be sold higher than separated coins. In 12 years there will be more collectors looking for missing coins (and able to pay more) than late stackers looking for full sets. And yes, I agree that the UK Lunar will be an interesting coin to stack, I plan to buy a hundred if the goats.

I would also consider the pandas as this year will be last before they change the design and weight, I think they will fetch a good premium in the future. You dont want to put all your eggs in one basket, nice fo have couple of different coins in your collection so you dont get bored looking at the same coins. Hope this helps with you choice.

Thanks for all your replies!

@CatStudent I hadn't considered that, thinking about it what you say makes perfect sense as for people wanting missing coins rather than full sets. Thanks for the advice.

@silverroller I did not know that about the panda's, I've always thought they where one of the best looking coins out there, it's just the premium that puts me off, but Im defiantly going to look into them now.

@bosse68 Thanks man and thanks for the advice, Im defiantly going to have another think about it before I dive in.

@Dave Interesting, I was considering buying just gold a few weeks back and forgetting about silver for the time being due to the VAT etc. That doesn't worry me anymore but again I think I need to think about this a bit more. Do you see any benefit of 999 gold such as the fractional Britannia's over sovereigns for example? Just something i've been curious about.

Anyway thanks to you all for your advice, Im probably going to hold back a few days and think about it properly. There's so many things to buy!

Hi bigevil, my advise as you are young, would be to get a mix,  Just buying RM Lunars or Britannia's will have no effect on most young persons Tax so there is no advantage there if you are planning to sell in 5 years.

If you buy Aus coins Koalas, Lunars Kooks you will get a capsule to keep the coin clean.

This is what I would buy

Option 1

1     gold Sov =      £184 inc post

20   Philh's    =       £246.60

5     Kooks  =         £68.7

5     Koala    =        £68.30

5     Lunar Goats   £87.6

5     RM Horses     £68.65

4     Pandas           £75.75

=  799.55 + postage

Option 2

Remove Sovereign and buy more Silver for the  £184

My advice: don't spend more than you can really afford. If 600 is comfortable then stick to it as your budget.

If spending 800 puts you under pressure or needs to be done using credit, then don't spend that much; leverage for silver is a dangerous route to go down.

After that it's up to you. I'd recommend getting a sovereign and using the other 400 or so on silver, but it really depends on your personal goals.

Hello

The only advice that I would give is to be aware of the facts that profitable silver stacking in the UK/EU is hindered by tax and/or duty.  This point has been discussed to death on this forum and you can look at the various points that are made and thus the pros and cons of the argument to whether or not profitable silver stacking is viable in the UK

At best the jury is out in regards to whether you will see a maximized return on your silver investment as opposed to placing your money in some traditional financial investments (Stocks, Bond, Property ISA's etc).

As you are young, and with a presumption that you need to start building your own life, liquidity I am assuming is going to be a big issue for you. If this is the case,  don't get locked into PM's as the time span for liquidation is not a certain, and you never know as and when you are going to need to get your hands on ready cash.

If you want to get your money out of sight and out of mind, a steady ( and yes so very boring!) investment in premium bonds may be better for you  :D

The lure of shiny things is appealing, But don't live to regret the fact that you had to sell these at a loss because you needed funds.

I think there's two ways of looking at silver at the moment, either buy the cheapest bullion coin you can find or something with numismatic value that can be sold on to collectors in the future, collectors getting into silver say three years or more from now will pay quite a bit to complete their date runs, they're the one's we want to be selling too.

The uk lunar horse from STG seems like a great buy along with the 2015 kookaburra, for quality you can't beat the Perth mint, the Kooks also come in a capsule and rarely milk spot so great for selling on to future collectors.

As for gold or silver, personally I can't look past silver at the moment, I hear a lot of people saying silver can be mined under $10 dollars an oz but the truth is the most productive cost effective mines struggle to pull it out of the ground for anything under $17, everyone should have a little gold and silver and there hasn't been a better time in years, saying that only buy what you can comfortably afford.

Enjoy, I know I do  :)
