Hi I have just bought half a tube of horse privy Brits and packing peanuts have been used to fill the rest off the space in the tube, if I leave them in there will it tarnish or scratch the coins?

Not sure about the packing peanuts but do take a look at the actual coins as these privy Brits have a pretty bad reputation.

You'll be lucky if they don't have any fingerprints, dents, scratches, milkspots, poor strikes, you name it these coins have it.

That is a very good question, not too sure.

I guess it depends on the composition of the peanut!!!

Is it dry roasted, salted, plain etc, this would very well affect the coins.

Are your coins from STG also, looks like I did the right thing by not buying from them recently.

No seriously I do not know!!

I just revieved my privy Brits yesturday and I must say I must be the lucky one because they are perfect which is why I'm worried that the packing penuts will destroy them

Would cotton wool work?

Cotton wool might work also in a long term storage solution.

I have given this a little thought and use my paper cutter to insert 38mm circles between the coins to prevent or minimise any potential scratches etc.

I think acid free paper may also work well here.

Assuming you are simply storing the tube upright I would remove all packing materials completely.

Over long periods of time various chemicals leech out of many products and some materials are designed to disintegrate.

You don't want contamination to discolour your coins.

So would you use camphor blocks or in granule form?

I see carbon or charcoal can be used to trap airborne hydrogen sulfide.

And of course silica packs to trap moisture.

my x 8       guernsey  doubles from guernsey mint came in a clear plastic tube ,  then stuffed with some bubble wrap to make up the difference

I use camphor blocks, they come in a box (about 20 in there) and they`re each wrapped up in a grease-proof type paper, I put one of those in the corner of my treasure chest, and also in my biscuit tin that i keep my jewelry making silver stock.

Moth balls work just as well but they smell kinda bad, camphor does the same job by creating a protective atmosphere.

although I still keep moth balls in my tool boxes and drill bits etc... as it stops rust too.

as it vaporises, it deposits on the coins or tools creating a moisture/gas proof layer that certain nasties can`t get past, I`m not sure if any chemical rxn takes place though, I`m fairly sure it`s a purely physical barrier effect but could be wrong.
