So if you had 5k what would you buy with it would you put it all into PM or put some into a bank account and some into PM would you buy all gold or all silver :]

Personally id get 3k worth of PM mainly silver and put 2k away in the bank

Question ---- is having 5k in a saving account earning little interest better than having 5k in PM

Maby im to conservative tho i dunno ?

i know 5k may not be much to some people but it will be a lot to loads of people :]

It all depends on you appetite for risk. Pm's are "probably" a safe investment especially at today's prices. I don't think I would put it all there though. How about 1k silver, 1k gold, 2k into shares/funds and 1k into an isa or premium bonds. Then you have a spread of risk so if one thing goes tits up you still have two more options. It scares me to think of people puting all their money in one thing. The risk/reward just feels too high to me.

I am maxed out on all my NISA's etc so for me simples 5k worth of gold.

wow big saver haha

youd get all sovs keith :]

i like the idea of chucking it alll into gold but some fixed saving accounts are ok tax free but even on 5k u don't get much back so is there any point for £50-100 a year

Some people will pay £5k or more for a 10 night cruise so it all depends on your personal circumstances.

If you have any debts or paying interest then get shot of that first if you can.

If you have suddenly landed a £5k windfall but do not have any other savings then get a NISA with the money invested into UK Equities paying good dividends. Assuming you already have a rainy day fund and will not need to use this £5k then buy some gold sovereigns or Krugerands where the premium is 3 % over spot or less. Silver can have a VAT element which you will not recover if selling back to a bullion dealer so you would end up having to sell privately or on feeBay. As a general rule it is widely recommended that commodities like PMs only represent between 5 and 15% of anyone's portfolio due to their high risk.

bullion pm's are a store of wealth, they don't actually increase your

wealth. Think of it like 1 oz of gold historically bought you a nice

suit then and buys you a nice suit now, it doesn't get you any more

than a nice suit.

with that in mind store what you want to hold onto, in pm's, investments

in other areas will fluctuate in terms of your return. invest in what you

know and the best investments are things that are unique to each

individual.

get a balance for what works best for you.

If I had 5k land in my lap tomorrow.

1 Oz, ½ Oz, ¼ Oz and tenth Oz gold Peth Mint Goat (I have all of these in the horse it would be nice to add to that!)

1 Oz Gold Britania

1 Oz Gold Panda

Tubes of cheap silver bullion. Libertads, Falcons, Eagles etc - Maybe even some crocks!

I would probably also add to my mini date run of silver Pandas. Another few  years would use up the rest I reckon. Like from 2000 to 2009 giving me every year since the turn of the century. Oh, and a 2015 of course, if they are out yet.

I might have over spent a little. But you didn't say we couldn't add a bit to it, you only asked what would we do! lol :P

I don't think there is any point having money in the bank at the moment. If they don't take it from you they will devalue it with inflation.

If you think I'm paying £800 for a nice suit, you're havin a larf........

I can go to Singapore and get one hand made to measure for a quarter of that.  I think that analogy is just a little dated.  ;)

Anyway with my £5k, I'll be mostly buying gold Sovs. Should be able to get about 25 of them.

Might as well see what that suspension can really do nd go to Brands Hatch

Ah Brands Hatch., that brings back some memories......... my old neck of the woods. I can remember cycling up there with friends must have been about 11 or 12 years old, and for a dare, climbing through fields and jumping over fences, and riding our pushbikes on a short part of the track. Gawd knows how we never got caught, but we only stayed a few mins and we were paranoid that we'd been seen and be followed home and our parents told.

But at least i can say, I have raced at Brands Hatch, (on my Grifter)   :D
