Newbie to collecting here folks.
I bought one of the 2022 proof sovereigns from the royal mint and I’ve been wondering about gradings.

How much would the grading cost? Would the grading add much value to the coin when the time to sell comes around?

Planning on long time hold for all of my coins, but curious of everyone else’s past experiences.

@GoldDiggerDave on here does grading ( pm him for cost )

Think the rrp on the jubilee sovereign was £585?

A graded pf70 will sell today for £930-£960ish

I like to buy the pre-dip dip

I’ve graded 35-40 2022 proof sovereigns, just got my 5 coin set back this week  I have sold lots between £800-950 the £5 sovs fetch 5.5-6k and sell very fast.

It all depends on what grade you get, proof sovereigns grade well and you are unlucky if you get a 69.

if you need to know anything else just give me a pm, I have done loads of grading for guys here.

I must have been unlucky as I reckon a third of my sovs got 69, £2 better and £5 perfect. The star of the lot was the half with a 100% 70 grading. This is unusual as I find the half is usually the worst by far.

1887M

Is this a DISH M8, Marsh 131E, Spink 3867B? Melbourne, second legend?

Yes, I'd say so. There's some helpful info for identifying jubilee head sovereigns here:

Thanks so much @Booky586 There seems to have been a lot of intensive research put into this series of coins!

Apologies for posting this Guinea in a Sovereign thread, but seemed the most relevant place for this question.

Looks like a double stamp of the 'R' in 'GRATIA'

Not mentioned in Farey's Guinea Guide, is this kind of thing too minor/common to list? He does list a several other varieties.

Not a "double stamp" which suggests a minting issue but a genuine "R over R" engraver's error. Probably tried to correct an out of alignment R by re-punching it.

I suspect that is what you meant😊

Thanks @sovereignsteve that's what I thought, re-stamp to correct wonky 'R'.

This 1858 Vicky shield is in a rather poor nick, but I wanted to share it due to the funny die break+clump on the reverse 'N" in REGINA. On a good day this one might also pass for unbarred 'A' variety, not sure. 🤷‍♂️

Yes that die crack is rather deep below the N

Some people might regard it as having unbarred A's but you can clearly see where the punch is broken. Depends how you define unbarred I suppose?

Personally I am only interested when the engraver has used an inverted V instead of a A

👍 Agreed, it's not a 'V' - and indeed a matter of definition, comparing to these for example:

Found this today when about to list for sale.

4 over a 4 maybe

Looks like a normal 4 to me, with a big horizontal ding near top of the 4.  I own an 1874-M sov which always seemed to me to be large 4 over smaller 4, but not really conslusive ...

As 90% of my gold and silver is for stacking, how do I find out if I may have something a bit different? Is there a good guide I can get hold of? I have the Marsh book but it's for general stuff, if you know what I mean.
