30th Birthday Present Ideas

Kman

Recommended Posts

It's my brothers 30th Birthday soon

I was thinking of getting him one of the following

  1. 1/4 oz gold coin & Bitcoin
  2. A Sovereign, maybe 1984 if I can get one or a 2014 & Bitcoin
  3. 1/2 oz gold coin

He isn't really interested in gold or bitcoin atm, I think only because he doesn't know too much about them, but he is interested in investments so I think if I gave him one of the above he would appreciate it

My trouble is I'm not sure what exactly to get him if I go with the 1/4 or 1/2 option

I'm more leaning towards a 9.999 gold coin atm over a sovereign unless I can get a mint condition 1984

Maybe a 2014 Kangaroo or Lunar Horse as they're both nice looking coins

It's a shame they don't do 9.999 1/4 Britannia

What do you guys think?

Is there any 1/4 oz that has more chance or rising in numismatic value than just the spot gold price.

Cheers

I would go for 1) or 2) - I think 22k is good for a non coin collector because it takes less looking after and he can play with it. 1/4oz krugerrand

I think I would go with a sovereign should it be 22k, keep it British *waves flag and hums the national anthem* lol.

Lunar silver kilo now I've had 3 seconds to think about it.

Silvers just not as impressive as a present  :P  to everyday folk anyway.

I wish you were my brother, mine got me 6 pairs of socks and left the sports direct stickers on.

here's a 1984 proof sovereign

http://www.goldsovereigns.co.uk/1984sovereign.php

Is there any reason the price on a 1984 should be £50 above a 2014? I know it's 30 years old but it's not old enough to value that much surely.

I googled other years

1981 for exmaple is £218 vs 1984 £241

Do they just hike up the price for a year because they know it's a potential 30th birthday present

I believe it's because that's a proof sovereign, you could probably find a uncirculated one for cheaper but the finish wont be so good.

Just been reading that there was no circulated 1984 sovereign only a proof one, I'm not sure why?

From 1983 to 1999 the Royal MInt had stopped making bullion Gold Sovs, and only did proofs. With mintages as low as 7500 a year

They restarted in 2000 making bullion sovs and went from 10,000 proofs in 1999 to 129,069 circulated sovs in 2000

I was lucky to get a 1997 half sov when I ordered two random half sovs from atkinsons. The 1997 half sov turns out to also be a proof with a 7500 mintage as well. Nice bonus from atkinsons I thought

Reading this, I cannot help wondering whether a coin (either gold or bitcoin) would be an ideal present for someone who has no stated interest in them. I know some people are a bit excited about BTC on here but as a present it's a bit... well, shit (IMO). It isn't even tangible; you might as well give some gift vouchers. A gold coin is nice, but unless it's the year of his birth it would be of no special significance and I can't see a non-UK one holding much attraction for a Brit if they aren't remotely interested in coins. Dunno, maybe I'm wrong but you asked for opinions.

Well, I wont be surprising you on your birthday  :P

The significance to both is they're little investments that will hopefully appreciate in value in time

My brother is a lot like me, so I know he will like them, even if he doesn't know it yet.

Have you thought about a big fat lump of silver?

Bit more "weighty" than gold & BTC.

Silver is off the table, I would get it maybe if it complemented a gold coin but not as the main present.

I would go for two full sovs both 1984 in a presentation box and caps. One showing obverse side and the other showing the reverse side.

I don't know

Really I want to give them as an investment

Paying well over spot for a coin that isn't going to really appreciate in value down the years seems not great

I think I would rather go towards pure investment than dates to be sentimental

Wealth protection.

The value of investments can go up, can go down.

Sovs stay pretty much at the same level.

I wouldn't like anybody to come back to me sayin, "That gift you got me last year is worth Feck All".

If the % is too high a couple of this years would still fit the bill or one of each a 1984 and 2014.

I'm actually starting to lean towards 1/4oz Lunar Horse

I did go with the horse

Just for the pure investment aspect of it & it's a nice looking coin

So finalised at that and a bitcoin.

So just had him round for a BBQ, gave him his presents

I actually put £10 in the card and pretended that is all I had got him  :D lol

Then gave him his real presents (took the £10 back of course  )

He seemed very pleased, asked if it was real gold lol, took a minute to explain what bitcoin is but he was very interested

So all went down very well  :D
