Britannia 2017 Platinum v Gold

It's not often that I get the same coin in platinum and gold available to photograph at the same time but it is quite interesting and may surprise some of you who have never given this much thought.

Both these coins contain exactly 1/4 ounce of metal. Platinum is denser than gold and therefore takes up less space.

Here you can see when one 1/4 ounce coin is on top of the other 1/4oz coin that the gold shows the whole rim underneath the platinum coin.

Maybe it's because i'm not owning a platinum coin and because of that i never saw it in-hand, but i don't like the look of it. It seems to me that this coin needs gold to look good.

It looks like the industrial metal that it often is, especially as so much of the coin is frosted.  Numistacker do you think the fields are more or less reflective than the gold one?

The fields are very reflective on both. I think the radiating lines on the shield are more pronounced and a little bit nicer on the platinum but they both look great.

The last time we were able to do a side-by-side comparison was in 2008. The sales for the quarter ounce 2008 going were 150 coins!!! This was in the midst of the world financial crisis and of course Platinum has 20% VAT which further clobbered sales. So the 2008 coin is the rarest of the Platinum Britannias.

And maybe the rarest Britannia of all?

I think it probably is the rarest Britannia what do you think?

5 Oz. Gold and 30 Oz Gold are 125 and 20 for 2017.  So I'd say it would be a runner for the lowest mintage to £ value for money stakes!

I can't seem to find the platinum coin anywhere online, are they sold out already?

Apmex has them.

But except for the silver 1oz and 5oz none of the versions is running low. So the uptake is definitely more laid back than the sovereigns.

According to specs the coins measure 20mm and 22mm respectively.

To me the platinum coin distracts nicer from the controversial design. Can it be that the Union Jack is much bolder on the gold coin?

Thanks chaps didn't realise it was a proof, I was looking for bullion and could not find them. Will they make a bullion version of this do you think?

I have no idea how you do it. Before I watched this video, I didn't like the design. Now I would have to admit "it's ok"...

Seeing these coins in movement adds another dimension to the perception.

I am glad you liked the video. History will tell what is good and bad rare and common. I don't think the 2013 will ever be truly loved. The 2014 will always be revered. The 2016 will be slowly risen from its humble beginnings. The 2017 will always be controversial and when it comes to value and discussion controversy is never bad.

It's a brace move for an important anniversary and most people will want it even if they don't yet realize that.
