My entry this year…going with the festive vibe!  
 

1kg Silver Bars

Some of the prices are unbelievable, however when people find out they are fake ,it will be the mint that they think about and not the seller, which in turn will hurt Scottsdale.
I would never look to buy their bars now, unless from someone I trusted.
@Heddersyour best bet to start with is research(which in itself can be as much of a pass time as collecting),then look to buy from the Forum, or at least get some advice.
There is also a list on here, somewhere of bullion dealers so you can't go far wrong.
I have an 1818 Half crown that cost me £450  it sits in front of the computer now, and is worth about £5,hard lessons cost the most.

Scammers use these sites to buy silver plated bars and then sell on ebay as the real thing. That is the danger of these sites and if they sell on ebay as 999 silver that is a scam that will fool many people and chances are would fool me too. That is unless they put in big writing this is silver plated in the listing.
 

I was just about to mention these almost all the Scottsdales "the one" are fake on Ebay at the moment,and a whole heap of PCCB slabbed coins all selling as real,  some even state they are plated, however are still being snapped up at full price!!  

A few more auction buys of late! I managed to bag a kilo of pre 1920’s silver which was heaven to sort through and a couple of kilos of 1920 50% silver. Once I’ve finished sorting I’ll photograph and post as I have discovered some beautiful coins.
LOVE buying lots at auction, they are a gamble, the discovery of searching through them is full of child like wonder!

Something kind of primeval about this, can only imagine how hugely satisfying it must feel. Alchemy!

I use Royal Mail Special Delivery as they are the only RM service that insures PM’s. I split any lot into multiple packages of £2,500 each when necessary and on the odd occasion I have had to individually insured single items well over that threshold.

Fantastic little auction buy. No silver sadly. I’ve only opened 25% tubes which mainly contain Uncirculated coins, apart from a couple of the old penny tube which was was full of used coins.

I’m amazed the power this stuff holds over me. I’m utterly besotted by it.
Ive done a little panning, nothing serious and I’ve never found more than a few grains... 

However a few years ago I stumped up and brought a good sized chunk Australian nugget, spending just under a grand. 
 
I instantly fell in love with the unnatural weight, the cold smooth surface... Unlike a coin, I found myself repeatedly getting it out to hold, it’s tactical shape was utterly alluring.
 
Lucky as I am, I managed to secure 20g of small nuggets for under £30 a gram, from someone who needed money fast and made an offer that was impossible to turn down.
 
And that was me, really hooked! Since then my ‘stack’ has grown and grown... 
 
Some of my nuggets are the most beautiful things I own. Under a scope you can clearly see its structure, how it’s grown. Some with quartz crystals growing together creating images very pleasing to the eye!
 
People talk about ‘gold fever’, men who gave up everything during the gold rush days gone by... I get it! It has almost a supernatural ‘hold’ over me. 
 
Does anyone else have the bug? 
 
It’s good investment material with collectors paying significantly over spot price for the shape they fancy...

I have a couple of Nuggets from Western Australia - love them - and of course they come in all sorts of forms which adds to the interest.  
 
In terms of buying...

The Perth Mint has a few cabinets full of nuggets (and larger ones to buy if you ask).
But the place to go is Kalgoorlie there are shops like this https://naturalgoldnuggets.com.au
If you know locals, you might be able to find someone who is selling nuggets from their own endeavours, but it’s pretty hard.  With a lot of family in Perth asking around for years I only found one person selling his finds, and those were pretty limited.

I ve never done any panning or stuff like this but I admit that a nugget has some kind of supernatural power of attraction , even through the screen.
